A reputable third party processing company is a better option.
Take a look at 2CheckOut, WorldPay, MultiCards, ChronoPay or CCNow.
2CheckOut and CCNow are both located in the U.S.

These are all crappy and expensive. I can't believe the hokey tech lameness of 2checkout. And they're exchange rates are a total ripoff.

For someone doing reasonable volumes, third party processors like 2checkout are the costliest option and having your own merchant account is usually the cheaper option. Then there is risk of third party processors disappearing with your money overnight just like what Paysystems and a few other companies have done in last 1-2 years.
If you disagree with me, then please explain just how a third part processor is better?

You could take contact to your local bank, I guess they will almost be the cheapest one to provide you with the payment services you need.

Third party processors are a viable option for any merchant that can't get a direct merchant account such as start ups or merchants with a business location outside U.S.
You just need to find the right processors and most reputable ones.
The ones listed have been in business for many years and don't blow up their accounts due to chargebacks as many other processors have done in the past.
Secondly, expensive is in the eye of the beholder. Third party processors don't ask for monthly fees, it all depends on how much volume you have. For some companies with huge volume it is still a better option (and only one) just because of the location of their business.
U.S. is not the only country where E-Commerce is popular you know...
If this question was asked by a company with a presence in the U.S., than I would have agreed with you as there are plenty of alternatives available in the U.S. to obtain a direct merchant account.
Unfortunately, these alternatives are not as plenty if you have a business outside the U.S.
