D3m0n 01-29-2007, 07:25 AM Hello,
I would like to know which of the opensource forums you think is the best.. I know of PhpBB and the SMF forums..
Vote for them.. and explain why..
PS: If you know any other post info about it..
CyberHostPro 01-29-2007, 07:26 AM free ones i recommend phpbb. i did use it, but got allot of spam on it, vbulletin is good but thats a paid product.
layer0 01-29-2007, 07:31 AM http://www.punbb.org/
http://www.mybboard.com/
are two other free ones
dyna! 01-29-2007, 09:11 AM Between SMF and phpBB I'd personally go with phpBB, wider user base, more information about it, more mods, etc... and maybe 3.x will finally un-beta itself soon. There are some 'light' forum packages that I'd consider though depending on what it's being used for.
flashack 01-29-2007, 09:21 AM bmforum is so good
David 01-29-2007, 10:19 AM Vanilla -- www.getvanilla.com
mrbister 01-29-2007, 10:20 AM I use CMS with phpBB built-in to it and I like it the most.
SMF ain't bad either, but not my #1.

We use SMF on two of our sites and vBulletin on the third, which has much higher traffic. One of the first two will go vBulletin eventually.
Yes, vBulletin is commercial, but $80 a year lease and $160 for a full license (plus $30 a year for support) is pretty cheap. One night out with the family at a decent restaurant will cover the price.
The problem I run into with the open-source people is that you don't have full-time staffers to help you in case of trouble, and if you are depending on your site for income, a few extra dollars shouldn't be a drain.
MyBB is definately the best. It has more features than phpBB and SMF combined. Vanilla is nice, but at least I think it only is useful in some situations.

I have used both, both are awesome.
catfished 01-29-2007, 01:31 PM Until recently, I would have praised SMF as the greatest thing since sliced bread but I have found their support to be almost non existent. I have been using SMF forums for about 3 years now and other than the first year, have never gotten any decent help from their support forums. At one point I joined their Charter Member option for a year, hoping for good support but never even received a helpful response to my posts in their Charter Member only forum or their help desk. If you're an experienced coder and all around computer geek, SMF will be awesome for you with all the bells & whistles plus all the neat, one click to install mods but make sure you speak geek before trying to get support.

Thanks for the tip - MyBB looks like a really nice forum app. with many features. Would be nice to see how it scale.

My concern is that it might be nice to try, but, after all this time, importing from an SMF board remains a promise, not a realization :(
jlgreer1 01-29-2007, 03:00 PM I prefer phpBB over SMF. I have used both. Some pretty large commercial forums such as Coast to Coast AM use phpBB.
I have several implementations of phpBB running and one vBulletin. vBulletin is the best our of all I have tried but it is fee based.

Vbulletin is not open source. You can get similar features in Mybboard.com and it's free
RossMAN 01-29-2007, 03:13 PM SMF (http://www.simplemachines.com) and MyBB (http://www.mybboard.com/)
CardsFanInChiTown 01-29-2007, 03:19 PM phpbb 3.0 should be out soon. It's going to be a major upgrade.
Go phpbb 2.0.22 then upgrade once 3.0 is out.
ufopsi 01-29-2007, 03:25 PM I vote for phpBB, even if, feature wise, is a bit behind. Version 3 should be a hot release. :D

In what way is PhpBB better than SMF?
Curious, because there are translators from the latter to the former.
