If you have two reseller accounts (eg at two different companies), what's the best way to handle the private nameservers?

Would you have

Reseller Acc 1
ns1.mycompany.com
ns2.mycompany.com

Reseller Acc 2
ns3.mycompany.com
ns4.mycompany.com

and so on...

Is it possible to just have ns1 and ns2 but still use two (or more) reseller accounts? I know it's possible with dedicated servers using DNS clustering, but is this a feature available on reseller accounts (WHM/cPanel)?

Thanks.

Well on WHM don't you have the option for DNS Management and Zone Control.

You'd have to have one server working as your DNS server, and I believe but correct me if I am wrong -- you could use your NS1.yourcompany from that server and point the domain to perhaps another server.

I am not 100% sure. But that is my view.

I would use ns1-ns2 & ns3-ns4 as you mentioned above

That's what I'm thinking too. I don't think reseller accounts have access to the dns clustering feature.

I agree on this as well. Less trouble for you and easier to maintain

What is the end result you are looking for? Do you just want redundancy? Or will you have different zones on each of the name servers?

Different zones on each reseller account:-

Reseller A has site1.com site 2.com etc

Reseller B has site4.com site 5.com etc

Then you should be ok with ns1 and ns2 on account A and ns3 and ns4 on account B.

Thanks. If i did want the redunancy option, what would you recommend?

For redundancy, I would set ns1 to account A and ns2 to account B and make sure all of your custsite1.com, etc are on both name servers. Then whenever a customer site was registered set your template so that they use ns1 and ns2. Depending on your control panel, this might not be easy to set up. I really only have experience with Plesk and manually editing Bind.

I would also use ns1-ns2 and ns3-ns4 as proposed earlier. For redundancy there's really no need to go away from this, and you can either set up customer sites with all 4 nameservers or just choose two on different servers, ns1 and ns3 for example.

Setting up the zone templates is easy in WHM - just look for the menu item under DNS functions.

But (and it's a big but!) once you do this you'll need to keep the zones synchronized on both servers, eg. when a customer adds a new subdomain on server 1 you need to find a way to update the zone on server 2, and on a reseller account you don't have access to the CPanel DNS clustering.

If you're managing the customer's account yourself then you may be ok with just going into WHM on server 2 and editing the zone manually. For an automated system my preference is to keep a "master" copy of the zone file externally and set the zones on both servers using a script based on the CPanel automation module (WHM remote-access keys).

Here's something that could do the job:

Buy another new domain name that is very close to your existing hosting company domain name and use that along with it's name servers.

No headaches with zoning issues.
