View Full Version : Looking for a great dedicated server deal

I have been looking for weeks now to try and find a feasable dedicated server solution that will support my initiall 200-250 gig bandwidth requirements while not going over $275/mo.

wedgehost.com has come close.
http://www.wedgehost.com/dedicated/linux.html

I find that most webhosts will offer a low price, but then only give you 10 gigs to work with. That I do not understand. If I needed only 10 gigs, I wouldn't go with a dedicated server at three to four times the price of a 550mb 25/gig shared hosting solution.

If I can get no setup fee and/or an introductory price for the first 3 months, that would be great too. Just work out the best deal you can possibly make and send it my way. Or refer me to a good website, so that I can check it out.

I require at least 200 gigs, (to support evernight.com a very large browser based gaming site.) 800mhz CPU (P3 or T-bird) a 20.7 gig IBM deskstar ATA/100 drive and at least 256mb ram. I don't want scsi as it would inflate the price about $200 too much for half the space. And I know Ram is cheap right now. High quality memory 256mb pc/133 cas2 for $130 average out the door right now. I also prefer T-bird as they tend to be cheaper than P3 right now.

I will send hardware to put into the server if it will drive the prices down. I have an extra HD and memory stick with that spec. 3/yr warranty on the HD, lifetime on the memory.

Also, please try to keep the bandwidth as low as possible. Within 4 months I plan to get a second server for load balancing, and the more you charge, the longer it will take to get the second server.

Thanks guys,
Jason Turner

Jason, while hosts are free to send their offers via email to you, I think that plan you posted (PIII 800 w/256MB Ram, 9GB HD with 150GB transfer for $285/mo w/o setup) is exxxxtreeeeemely good.

You basically want around $1/GB and them to throw in a top of the line server for nothing, and it ain't gonna happen.

You might be better off buying a server and colo'ing it at a place that will give you a capped line (or burstable *possibly* but I doubt it at that price), like:

http://maxim.net/colocate/pricelist.html

Note: I don't recommend them, I just have it bookmarked. You'd still have to get the server, plus I'm not sure what rack fees/etc. they have.

Since you want 200-250 GBs of transfer and aren't looking at going over $275/mo., I'd like to know what you think is a reasonable per/GB rate (let alone adding the cost of leasing the server *with* that).

265mb ram is $140 800mhz CPU is $195 20 gig HD is $148 all include tax and shipping everything else is optional to either find the most expensive parts or the cheapest parts either way they are the same parts.

$3/gig is a little bit high for someone that needs 250 or more gigs to work with initially.

Point being, all I need is a jump start. After that I would be able to support that $3/gig.

However, $2.50 seems more reasonable.

Well, ignoring the server for the moment, you're at $500 already. For the server, it's just under $500 (and that's just a few parts, not the entire server). Keep in mind the datacenter costs money: floorspace, rackspace, routers, switches, cooling, backup power, fireprotection, support.

I don't see how you can expect all this for anywhere near $275/mo, but good luck... what you found is better than anything I've ever seen. :)

Keep in mind that you may be sacrificing more important things like support, customer service, quality network, etc..etc...etc... just to get that price you're looking for. You may regret it in the long run!

I looked for something but if it helps, this is related to the site http://www.wedgemusic.com/ and you can find a couple of posts on that (if you search).

I remember some negative thread on it awhile back ago, do a search, the owner runs a mp3 type site if I recall correctly

It was wedgemusic, but to get rid of confusion they split the websites up.
