At the end of may i will have finished my exams and am going to start a hosting company. I have been running free hosting for about a year but i dont think the banner is going to last long. Ive been looking to co-locate a server with a company and most charge between 2.5-3$ per gb of transfer.
All im wondering is how can hosting companies have plans that give 10gb of transfer a month for about $19? That would cost $25-$30 alone for the bandwidth. I presume most just use the rule that the average customer will not use all of the bandwidth allocated, correct?
Also how many signups can i expect to get per month, i have a large free hosting network, easily 3million banner views a month which i can use some of to promote my new company.

Very few people will use up the 10 GB of transfer...
For example:
4Webspace
100 GB bandwidth,
this doesnt mean that you can only have 10 users. Most people use 2-3 GB monthly but if they do exceed 10 GB.... Ur screwd hehe

If you were to build a super store in the middle of the forest that had the lowest prices in the world and plenty of parking, but failed to put up signs, nor promote it, you'd have a big empty super store with no sales and would have to close your first month.
The web is like building a store in the middle of the forest.

The best way to advertise is advertise through Network Solutions. I have seen Interland mailing a ad to all the domains registered to NSI.
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to go out and earn the business locally. You would be surprised at what is in your neighborhood. There are many businesees that are not on the Net and many more who are, but don't know what they are doing.
Hold their hand, let them know that they have a local presence. This is a wonderful thing for people. I can guarantee that if you really go out and bang on doors, you will end up busier than a pawn shop in Vegas.
Also remember: Referrals are a wonderful thing.

I'm not sure if that was serious or if you were joking, but I can't believe this is very effective. When I get that type of junk mail I either throw it away at the Post Office or throw it in the trash when I get home.
SPAM mailed through the "physical" mail is even more annyoing than SPAM mailed via email.
My reaction to the Interland mailings was that I said to myself "make a mental note never to go with Interland because they spend their money to send SPAM rather than to buy good servers or offer good support."
Just my two cents.

Exactly. We're starting to get spam through the akashik.net mailboxes. As it's one of the few spam free inboxes we have I take it more than a little personally. Needless to say it gets downloaded just long enough to copy the headers and body before being put through Spamcop.
Will it do any good? Maybe not. Every little bit helps though I suppose.
