Not sure if this is in the right category or not, but what exactly does a ping test mean?

I did this test on my site and got the following however its taking up to 2 minutes to load the front page.

Is this not a good ping test below? If not what is?

IP address: 208.44.85.112

28.06/69.245/148.021 ms

Whats a traceroute for? Any information or links that explain this would be helpful.

Thanks

Just pinged it again and got this:

10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 35.014/232.085/395.941 ms

a good one should be under 100ms anything over 150 is slowww at best :(

basic explaination is to trace a connection/packet from point A to point B, the gurus on this forum can explain further :)

I did a trace at: http://www.tracert.com/cgi-bin/ping.pl

too for various locations and got all kinds of different numbers. My current host is in California so the ones that I used in California traced well but outside of California they didn't trace very well with an average over 150ms.

I take it on the above site its tracing from whatever location that you click on to my server?

And I take it that Avg. is the key number to look at?

Is anyone familiar with the-web-presence-group hosting company?

Thanks for the links.

Depending on what connection you are on ping times should be low. The best way I would say to compare speeds of a host is to do this

ping http://www.yahoo.com

ping http://www.hostname.com

if you see that hostname.com > yahoo.com by a bunch then you should look elsewhere :)

Speaking of Yahoo!, they've got a very reliable traceroute feature that I use often:
http://net.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/trace.sh

With the power problems in California, which it appears are destined to get worse, why any host would set up on servers located in that State is beyond comprehension. I would certainly be concerned about any major commercial web site housed on a server there. Some may have back up power but I would bet a lot don't.

LOL check out this colo facility http://www.dynamic.com and http://www.dynamic.net, this place is like 5-7 miles away from my house. Now, if there prices were only reasonable, id go with them but it ain't.
