Authorize.net would be considered one of the best.

Get an Authorize.net account from http://cdgcommerce.com. You won't be disappointed.

Keep in mind that Authorize.net is not a merchant account - it is an electronic payment gateway like Payflow and LinkPoint. You still need a merchant account to accept credit cards.
It really depends on your location. Some processors cannot accept businesses that are based in certain parts of the world. If you are in the United States - you have hundreds of ISOs to choose from and thousands of agents

I think Corey was trying to say that you cannot accept credit cards with just Authorize.net: you still need a merchant account. For example, we use LinkPoint as the gateway and First Data Merchant Services as our merchant account provider.

explain more??... what else would i need with authorize.net?A merchant account. Have the gateway would not be enough to accept credit cards. The gateway usually gets your MID (merchant ID) and TID (terminal ID) and your merchant account number. You enter this information into your virtual terminal and or code and now the gateway knows whose money it belongs to.
The gateway is something like the first step in the e-commerce transaction. It goes to the transaction processor (like First Data, Nova, etc). This company can potentially authorize / decline the transaction depending on some factors. If not, it goes to the acquiring bank to the card association to the issuing bank for authorization. And then back up the chain.
And then (short version): A batch (sometimes called merchant balancing) will be ran at night and then you have capture, clearing, interchange (for Visa / MasterCard, settlement, and ACH (putting the money into your bank account.

Why recommend 2checkout.com? They're terrible compared to real providers and charge a fortune.
Unless you're overseas and really stuck no one should ever use them.
