I have quick question regarding WHMCS owned license.

Let's say I buy WHMCS owned license and WHMCS go out of the bussiness... what happens to WHMCS owned license? can not use it anymore?

As I know WHMCS license server checks every 5 days for valid license... so if no license server? admin area is locked?

Reason, I am submitting this on WHT because when I submitted on WHMCS forum, they deleted thread.

Let's me know if anyone know about it.. Also if anyone use same license management system as WHMCS, can you asnwer that question?

true, you can buy an owned lisence - granded forever, and the company could go bust the next day = bye bye money.

also if you do stop youor buisness, and WHMCS is still alive, you can sell your lisence.

If the business owner is no longer around, and the licensing checks every five days, it would shut down. From what I know of Matt, it would take something quite serious to keep him from being available. But what if he's hit by a car or something? That's the real question...

Well there is a reason for this. FRAUD!

It would not be wise on his part or any other software vendor to have a license file for owned licenses to just check the first login and be done or even have a non expiring license file for atleast 6 months.

There are so many times you have someone buy something and 2-3 months later sometimes even longer till you get notified by paypal or your merchant account about a payment dispute or stolen credit card.

Come on guys, its not a lot of money for a license. Even if you used it for only a year, you still got your moneys worth. Licensing checks are needed. Maybe he could have it setup to only do the checks for a month, i dont know. But i am not worried about it either. Even if he died and it didnt have license checks, it would only work for a little while longer anyway as some third party software like cpanel or plesk would be upgraded and make half of whmcs useless and we wouildnt be able to do a thing about it because its encoded. Thats just chance you take when buying commercial software.

all that data is still there and in the db. You would not lose any of the information. just like Matt whips up an import script for other billing solutions to whmcs, it wouldnt be that hard to whip up one to go from WHMCS to another solution. Im not saying any of this would be easy, im just stating that it wouldnt be the end of the world. If matt was hit by a bus, his servers would not go offline that same day either.

I think they should upgrade their licensing system to check the fraud order only,when fraud cases occur,their licensing system only need to check those cases,leave the rest run smoothly.They should enhance their fraud order checking also.
The problem is not about money,it is hard to find a billing system that you would love it and its functions too.It will take you weeks or even months to transfer to new billing system.

yes, db will be there? but which and other billing provider will provide importer? also the point is not that.. why should we change to other billing system even we purcahse it as owned license? that is main question.. can we keep use it? no, at this point, right?

This is clearly a risk you take when buying owned licenses. As bear pointed out, there is always the issue of an accident however you would hope that backup plans have been made. Owned license have to be check too as someone could easily get your key and start using your license.

Owned license are there for convenience, if you are too worried to buy one then a leased license would do fine. It's just about what you prefer, some people would prefer nothing having to worry about paying every month.

Sorry, but I disagree.

If he is using something like the "weightshift" option included in www.phpaudit.com, then it is possible to have 100% uptime of the license system because there would be unlimited number of license servers to handle requests. If one server dies, another one automatically is used, etc...

However, if the vendor dies or the license database is corrupted or whatever.. then there is a problem.

In that case, it is better to perhaps purchase your billing software from an established company that is not a "one man band".

I knew that, but the user was asking me if I can change the domain in the license, if I change my domain or not, he was not asking me if this is possible to sell or not. :)

100% uptime is possible, IF you want to pay for it. And i think we all know here that most customers do not need or even want to pay for it.

Anyways, did anyone look at the price of WHMCS at all ? Where are we talking about ?!?

Besides a huge diference with some other packages around is that the CLIENT side of the software will NOT stop working, your customer will not notice the software stopped working.

Why is 100% uptime a lie ?

The answer is very easy, because:

All servers need to be rebooted every now and then for security and software updates. If they never reboot that means their server is insecure and they will eventually be hacked.

so it doesn't worth for you to pay for a 100% uptime server. This is just waste of money for you.

nimasdj, i would go and read a bit more about high availability systems, true you cant guarantee 100% uptime on a SINGLE server, but who is talking about that?

Again, 100% uptime is a price issue, not a limitation!
