I just heard that Zend is contacting companies that have the word "php" in their commercial products and forcing them to change the name and URL! Anyone know/heard anything about this? Can they do such thing?

(SH)Saeed 06-28-2002, 11:02 AM I just heard that Zend is contacting companies that have the word "php" in their commercial products and forcing them to change the name and URL! Anyone know/heard anything about this? Can they do such thing? Jeremy W. 06-28-2002, 11:04 AM No, they can't, PHP is not a copyrighted name and Zend doesn't actually own it. (SH)Saeed 06-28-2002, 11:17 AM I hope and think you're right. PHP is way too common for them to pull something like this. Jeremy W. 06-28-2002, 11:21 AM PHP is open source licensed under a GPL variant. They just changed the licensing, but it isn't any more restrictive. I think whoever posted this needs to provide a link to the source. I interviewed the creator of PHP so I'm pretty sure I can drop him a line and give him an earful ;) AussieHosts 06-29-2002, 08:57 AM We received a similar message today from the developers of a piece of software we use, and they've changed their name already. Gary WildWayz 06-29-2002, 10:08 AM Yep - got an email from phpManager software about it too. James avara 06-29-2002, 11:06 AM I wasn't able to find anything about this on their web site. Anyone have the address of a press release or announcement? AussieHosts 06-29-2002, 11:44 AM They might put something up about it on their new site at www.hostcms.com They're planning on a July launch. Cheers Gary |
