View Full Version : UK Payment processor and Merchant Account Required
princejames1 01-11-2007, 09:14 PM Does anyone have any suggestions on a reliable, and cheap UK payment processor? Would require a merchant account aswell. I do have over a years financial history.
VelocityPay have just released a statement stating they are insolvent, and will be terminating their services as of tomorrow!
Thanks
Corey Bryant 01-12-2007, 04:10 PM You might check out the gateway Protx and then some processors like Barclays, HSBC, or Lloyds of London.
thejustbiz 01-12-2007, 09:00 PM Do you have a merchant account? If you have, then Protx is the best gateway in UK as they are very competitive on price. if you do not have an account, then are you member of FSB? they got a good merchant accout setup (depends on the type of goods) and then use Protx as well..
Otherwise try WorldPay, they can get you a merchant accout but % can be quite high. If you are selling electron services (i.e. auction site or forum access etc), DO NOT go to HSBC, they do not understand the business and asking endless questions with inspection to the site; plus change their mind on things that they agree on previously!

you need to get a UK merchant bank account (i.e. not personal) then you ask the business banker to give you a set of forms to fill in..
It is a lot of hassel in the UK.. as all the merchant processing is controled by the bank and they will say whether they will have you as a client or not.. The worst one for online processing is HSBC.. as they do not even know what rules they want to apply.. so don't bother opening an account with them. The most straight forward I would say is try WorldPay first.. they can offer an one stop shop but they can be quite expensive.. (i.e. over 5%)
vkess 01-21-2007, 02:07 PM I agree, PROTX are the best in the UK.
I had a few problems with getting an ecommerce site up and running. Once you've got your merchant account you need to apply for an Internet Merchant Account. Before the bank would issue this they requested to see the site up and running first to make sure the site was legitimate.

TheGreat1 01-22-2007, 11:47 PM Hi,
I recommend ProTX for the processor and we use Lloyds TSB for a merchant account. Bit of advise tho, when you get your merchant account (if you havent already) speak to the sales guy and say you got other quotes and they will normally either match em or lower them.. We got a monthly fee removed and lower rates :)

Kasiab 01-23-2007, 10:28 AM I agree protx is good as it offers solutions for small and large business, which helps keep the costs down
Do you have a merchant account? If you have, then....Since the OP said Would require a merchant account aswell. I guess he doesn't have a merchant account ;)
tickedon 01-25-2007, 01:32 PM Contact Bank of Scotland merchant services. Setup is around £250 (haggle and they will reduce it), no monthly/annual fees, and transaction rates are fairly good as well. They also work with Protx, so they tick all the boxes :) They managed to beat every other quote I had, so well worth giving them a call.
safebrowsing 01-25-2007, 08:18 PM We are also looking for solution. WE have applied to Barclay because we are based in UK and have Barclay business account. But Barclay adviced that they have 45 days money delay for online e-commerce now. Does every UK bank do like Barlcay ?

Bank of Scotland Merchant services is 3-4 working days... :) It really depends on the provider, I know someone with WorldPay who was waiting 5 weeks and even after nearly 2 years of perfect trading they didn't want to lower that.
You really need to shop around and get the best deal. You also don't need to get the merchant account from the same place as you bank at, Bank of Scotland Merchant services for example will give an account to people who bank with other banks.
safebrowsing 01-26-2007, 07:12 AM Thank you tickedon !
Today I've contacted several organization :
Metacharge - 30 days money delay, looks like professionals by the way
Web Merchant Services Limited - can place you to the bank of Ireland, 3-25 days money delay but you have to wait a long for a merchant account
Payoffshore - can place to many banks on your behalf, not sure about money delays.
Worldpay - 30 day money delay, only shared payment form.
Velocitymerchant - nobody answer the phone.
Applying to UK bank directly for merchant account is really annoying process. Are there any other organization in UK or outside UK that can place fast on your behalf ?
tickedon 01-26-2007, 09:15 AM I agree it can be annoying :) I only know of banks offering good rates & quick payments to be honest - Bank of Scotland do 3-4 working days, and I'm told both Barclays and Lloyds TSB go even further with daily remittance. Most will deal with you over the phone, otherwise, you can simply pop into a branch - well worth giving the banks a shot, most seem to do much better deals than the other providers (but, it does depend what you are doing).
At the end of the day, a merchant account is a pretty important thing - if you choose the wrong provider, you'll just have problems. It might take some time to find a provider that does everything you want, but, it's time well spent :)
dkitchen 01-26-2007, 09:39 AM Barclays + Protx is a good combination, we have our merchant account and our business bank account with them and they have been fantastic. I also have my personal with them too (though the service isn't quite as good for personal).
You should be aware that it is very hard to get a merchant account when selling services such as hosting, etc, online, you are often better saying your main category of business is computer consultancy or something simular. The reason for this being the fraud rate for web hosting is sky high...

safebrowsing 01-26-2007, 12:07 PM Thanks for an update !
We are software developers I wount say that it's too much risky, moreover we process all orders manually and have Maxmind account as extra antifraud monitoring.
Still Barclay insist that all new comers are set to 45 days payment delays.
By the way it's not exactly Barclay but EPDQ. May be that's EPDQ policy ?
If I'll ask Barlcay to issue MID to process via Protx could this help to reduce payment delay ?
Because rate is not so important for us. We have affiliate agreements with traffic dealers so we need to pay weekly for delivered traffic.
Thanks in advance for helpfull ideas !
ButterApple 02-04-2007, 03:12 PM I would use gateway protx and for Merchant Account i would use alliance-leicester.
