How do hosting companies have the ability to offer free software with reseller accounts for example:

Hostgator offering WHMAP free with all reseller accounts

Dont those licenses cost more than the hosting account is physically worth?

Most software companies offer reseller programs and the more license's you have the deeper the discounts usually.

I bet places like hostgator have hundreds of leased license's for whmap so they are getting them for really cheap. I do not remember ever seeing a reseller program on whmap's website so this particular host might have a special deal with them.

if their get it in bulk the rate will be much cheaper alot

Many companies purchase large quantities of licenses at once for the sole purpose of offering it with their other services.

Some Billing Softwares (e.g. iHost) give the ability to install more than a few copies on one server only for no extra charge. I'm assuming that could be one of the factors.
