View Full Version : Fraud Orders
HostingOne-Jeff 01-08-2007, 12:23 AM Hello,
I'm thinking that maybe we could (even with a website or just this thread) work together to keep a list of IPs / emails that are placing fraud orders on our sites.
What do you think?
Well I'll start it off (I'm **** the first 4 letters of the email to shield it from spam bots, just incase):
Angel Mario

Are the rest of you blocking Nigeria completely, or how do you handle these types of orders (although the order address was a fake US address)?
integrity_host 01-08-2007, 02:50 AM Jeff,
I applaud your efforts, but I think this fight may be too big for a WHT post. Nearly all the fraud is off-shore organized crime and they will never stop so long as they have government sponsorship, new ideas, and people keep falling for phishing mails.
Greenlush 01-08-2007, 06:26 AM I think it would deffantly be a really good idea Intergrity says... It wont stop it completly, i had a few fraud orders 2 or 3 months ago and its just annoying more than anything else, complete waste of time
HostingOne-Jeff 01-08-2007, 10:39 AM True,
I was just suggesting from a web hosting standpoint. However, I guess a manual review of most orders should catch everything (such as the IP being from Nigeria). However, not all are so easy to spot. Even a centralized list could be made between web hosts, and then a simple PHP script could check the list and kill the order script with a message that the order cannot be accepted. Of course, as mentioned, fraud is quite more widespread then this.
prudents 01-08-2007, 01:07 PM why the topic of Nigeria. There is always fraudulent order all over the internet and which could be placed from anywhere and by anyone.
What I can suggest to you is to review your order manually.
IceBlueHost 01-08-2007, 02:36 PM I agree, you should not pinpoint Nigeria or any other particular country.
It's true of course that certain countries tend to be more risky when it comes to fraud, but fraudulous signups come from all over the world, so you always need to keep your eyeballs open.
Using integrated antifraud systems is always a good idea, plus checking them manually as well.
Greenlush 01-08-2007, 04:34 PM in the guys defence, iv had more than 20 fraud orders come from Nigeria

rllunzmann 01-09-2007, 10:13 PM agreed, we should leave these hopes in the hands of our merchants and hope they only better there tactics against fraud.
ATLDedicated 01-09-2007, 10:36 PM I have had people order servers and then have then turn our to be fraud. They used the server from the last fruad order to order from me. I am still tracking back links in the chain.
The users ip is not a foolproof detection method.
kubel 02-24-2007, 04:35 AM I agree, you should not pinpoint Nigeria or any other particular country.
Nigeria should be pinpointed since it has a reputation for corruption (31 out of 37 of Nigerias state governors were under investigation for corruption in September). International fraud is the 3rd largest source of revenue for the Nigerian economy.
eming 02-24-2007, 04:46 AM yes, honestly - blocking Nigeria via htaccess makes a lot of sense
SLH-Ken 02-24-2007, 03:21 PM This(keeping a long list of fraud ips) has been tried before and never really caught on. Its just too big of a project, plus these fraudsters are usually clever enough to just try from somewhere else. Using a fraud protection software like FraudGuardian, plus using old fashion having a human review new orders are the end of the day is the best we got.
prudents 02-24-2007, 04:01 PM I am sorry for saying this, but you must be out of your mind for saying such things about Nigeria. Nigeria is blessed with alot of mineral resources.
Why would people from all over the world coming to invest in Nigeria. We have a reformated Nigeria now.
Though are are fraudster but not everyone is a fraud. Fraud is everywhere. All over the world.
I will only advise you to make your advance verification of payment prior to activating your client account.
Thank you
