I've got a Canon Powershot something or other. It's really nice so far, and takes great pictures for the computer. It was somewhere around $400-500. You may want to research the Powershot line. My parents got ours at a reasonable price (at the time) through mysimon.com.

If you can find one the Fuji Finepix is a good digi-cam with high quality images and videoclips. It's not cheap but good value.

That's sort of like asking "what car should I buy?" It really depends on how much you're planning to spend and what you'll be using it for. Web images only? Family snapshots? Pro-style magazine shots? Will you be printing images, or just viewing them?

You can get good cameras for anywhere from under $200 to over $3000 -- where in that spectrum you want to look depends on what capabilities you need.

In general, though, I'd agree with NSyncVillage that the Canon Powershot line is worth a look. They're as well-constructed as any, use good lenses, and each model has a good selection of features for the price range it's in.

I bought a Sony P5 for the arrival of my son, and I use the HELL out of it. He is 7 months old and I have over 2GB of pictures ;) It is an excellent camera, takes VERY clear pictures.

It cost me $790 USD total, but that is with a 64MB memory stick and a warranty, otherwise it is $499.99 plus 7.5% sales tax, you can figure out the total for yourself, heh.

i was just looking at the finepix 2600, it looks good.

says it comes with "16MB SmartMedia"

what's the difference between all the different types of memory, eg compactflash/smartmedia.

with the finepix can you buy bigger memory cards/swap them around?

I don't know the Finepix 2600 so I can't comment on it; mine is a 4900Z - you can get information at the following link which is a great camera forum:

Compact and Smartmedia cards are available in 8, 16, 32, 64 and now 128Mb and you can get small card diskdrives as well.

This is the one I have. A Sony DSC-S50

Excellent camera in my opinion. It's a slightly older version than those skinny little ones they have now though.

Incidently you should spend some time at the site mentioned above - possibly the best online comparison and review site for cameras there is.

You can always go to www.epinions.com for user rating of digital cameras. I will tell you that in having shopped for digital cameras several times over the past year, I keep going back to Olympus over and over again. Their optics are great and really improve the quality of the images over some other brands who weren't established in the SLR film camera business before digital.

I agree 100% about Olympus. I have the C-2100UZ (see it here: http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_product_lobbypage.asp?l=1&p=16&bc=2&product=641) and couldn't be happier with the performance. With a 10x OPTICAL zoom (and 2.7x digital bringing you to 27x if you have them both kicked in) this camera gets me closer than anything else could to some shots. It also has image stabilization, and a TON of other features. It was discontinued as far as I know, but you can still pick one up at some CompUSA and other retailers for around $400 - an absolute steal, considering I paid $825 for mine just 2 years ago.

You will not be disappointed with this camera.

I'll have to chip in for a Canon Powershot series... I have the Canon S110 - very slim, compact, and takes great pictures even though it looks like the quality would be sarcificed by how compact it is...

I hate to work on my photos in an image editor, so I got a Canon S40. It takes pictures that are so good that you don't need to work on the pictures anymore.
