View Full Version : Pentium IV
SI-Chris 02-10-2001, 07:43 PM Has anybody used a Pentium IV-based PC? Not for Web hosting, but for everyday computing, website building, etc. I've read the reviews, but I'd be interested in hearing the impressions of someone that's actually used/owns one.
ThinkSeven 06-21-2003, 09:27 PM it's good, i would go with the amd athlon though
Acroplex 06-21-2003, 09:33 PM You mean P4 :D
Yes, I switched over from years of AMD experience and free heating for my house :D The VIA chipsets are also unstable.
Currently using an ASUS P4P800 deluxe motherboard with a 3GHz P4 & 1Gb of PC3500 DDR RAM
It burns rubber! Photoshop never loaded faster, rock solid stability, quiet fan (I got the retail P4 CPU) and goodbye crashes.
blue27 06-21-2003, 09:36 PM I use a P4 2.0. It's a Dell model. Fast as lightning and very stable with WinXP Pro. 50 days without a reboot.

Acroplex 06-21-2003, 09:48 PM I doubt it. My temperatures are 15 C lower than with XP 2100 and the noise from fans is non-existant.
KIA-Joe 06-21-2003, 09:52 PM P4 all the way ... stay away from that AMD crap ... they are cheap for a reason.
Acroplex 06-21-2003, 09:54 PM Actually my Athlon box was not bad at all. It's the chipset that makes the difference and the VIA drivers are buggy.
KIA-Joe 06-21-2003, 10:03 PM Don't even mention VIA ... It gives me horrifying flashbacks!

P4 3.06GHz = ~82W
XP 3000+ = ~74W
And KIAHost, please. If that's the way you feel then I guess I should feel the same about your hosting then, right? Stay away from that KIA crap... it's cheap for a reason.
I agree that VIA chipsets are horrid. That's why we have nForce2. I wouldn't consider using anything else (well not until nForce3 comes out in a few months, which by the way, when paired with an Opteron will blow any Intel combo out of the water.)
Acroplex 06-21-2003, 11:03 PM You forgot to mention that the rate of heat dissipation of Athlon is severely affected by its small die (thumbnail size). The P4 has a large die that covers the entire CPU. Heat dissipates across time more evenly while the Athlon has a much slower rate and temperatures reach crazy numbers. I could not believe it when I saw it! As a long time AMD fan I can honestly tell you that if you want your sanity, stick to a P4.
Phrozen 06-21-2003, 11:06 PM Yes I'm aware of that... it's the reason for the cooler P4 temps. I'm sure I'll keep my sanity with AMD though as I currently have a 1700+ and the fan is silent.
Knogle 06-21-2003, 11:18 PM I'll be getting my P4 2.6Ghz system sometime next week. :D
NickRac 06-21-2003, 11:19 PM I have a p4 and I suggest it over AMD unless you're going for dual AMD MP's ;-)
FW-Mike 06-21-2003, 11:35 PM I've not had a single problem with any AMD computer I have (Which is all but the mac now). I buy AMD becuase of the price, I'll be honest, but aside from the heat there are no problems.
Acroplex 06-21-2003, 11:36 PM Atheist, I used to be a non-believer too :D but I tried this Intel and now I am a born-again man LOL

Totally uncalled for.
Are you the creator of that chip? I think not ... so don't take it so personally.
And we aren't considered cheap by any means ... we charge enough to accommodate growth.

Totally uncalled for. What? Uncalled for? All I did was quote you.
Are you the creator of that chip? Don't I wish. Nope, just a happy user who feels like voicing his opinion.
And we aren't considered cheap by any means ... we charge enough to accommodate growth. And who's to say AMD is cheap "by any means"? They seem to be doing well enough to "accomodate growth". Hey, they've already grown from 462 to 940 pins.

Someone's a fan boy.. have you even ever tried and Athlon??
designNYC 06-22-2003, 02:53 AM Hey kiahost maybe you should change KIA in the name to Bentley or Benz or Mclaren Host.
KIA = cheap korean cars in US ( nothing wrong with them just low end stuff )
:D
FW-Mike 06-22-2003, 03:15 AM KIA = know it all

You mean.. born-again geek? LOL just kidding, I think actually that my next computer will be intel just to give it a try

It's still a crap car. Why? I owned one.
Knogle 06-22-2003, 04:39 AM How about we get back to topic instead of flaming each other, or discussing something irrelevant?
mahinder 06-22-2003, 08:55 AM AMD fans are very noisy. When i am sleeping in night and my computer is on, i feel like i am sleeping in space ship or in submarine with doooooooooooooooooooooo sound :D
edit: typo errors

Well that is your fans... not AMD's fault... Of the 4 AMD-based computers I have, only one is loud (its ridiculous - but only because I went out and bought a tornado triple CPU fan lol).
Never had any problems with any of them (500, 650, 1000, 2100+).
Three of the computers are in 'the computer room' which I dont have to heat in the winter at -25°C. In the summer I just open a window :D
I think its a Coke/Pepsi thing... they both serve the same purpose but each brand has huge loyalty. I just happen to be an AMD guy :)
I've got a P4, and had it for just over a year.
Pretty happy. Running an Intel DDR board with a P4 1.6Ghz.
okihost 06-22-2003, 11:54 PM The only thing Intel is outperforming in is PRICE over AMD
I have owned both and honestly have not had an issue with either so I really could not tell you the difference, but then again I am not into the whole hardware thing. I build my own PC's usually, but as long as its working I don't have any complaints.
Acroplex 06-23-2003, 12:19 AM This is my first Intel CPU and I can tell you that after years of AMD CPUs I have 100% rock solid stability and extreme performance; about the price, the P4 3GHz is worth the extra $120 over the XP 3000+
viGeek 06-23-2003, 01:13 AM The new P4's aka P4-C, are awesome, 800 FSB, Hyperthreading. And some budget models that overclock extremely well (2.4 & 2.6). Right now im running an AMD Athlon XP 2500 (Barton) system, with the Nforce chipset, I have it overclocked to Athlon 3200 levels, and I need to go faster, so I think ill pickup one of those 2.4 GHZ P4-c's and overclock to 3.6 GHZ.
