View Full Version : Transferring a domain but not the name servers

Hello,

I have this situation:

I have a domain with RegisterFly/Enom. I have edited the DNS records for the A and MX records to point to my web and mail servers. Both services are live.

Suppose I now transfer this domain to another registrar, let us say NetSol. As I understand it, even after the transfer is successful, the nameservers of the domain will still be those of Enom and there will be no interruption in service. Is my understanding correct?

If yes, will the control panel at NetSol allow me to make subsequent changes to DNS entries -- say adding an A record --, even though they are stored on Enom name servers and not on NetSol's own nameservers? Or would I first have to change the nameservers to those of NetSol? Wouldn't that entail a nameserver-change downtime of "24 to 36 hours" of my web and mail services?

Hello,

The same servers of the domain should point to the server where your domain is currently hosted. Yes every registrar gives you a panel to update the dns records of your domain.

Thank you.

When you change registrars the NS info pass with the new registrar but not the settings you make to the A, or MX

If the new registrar has DNS modification control panel you can modify them the moment your domain is transfered there

Not every registrar gives you DNS control by default , some of them charge extra

Ok to answer your question,

Since your original nameservers were pointed to eNom's, you have to change them to netsol's upon successful transfer in order to use the DNS services provided by netsol, and yes, expect a 24-48 hour downtime.

When the DNS resolves successfully then change the A and MX records.

Good Rules to follow:

1. NEVER host from a Domain Company/Registrar.

2. NEVER purchase/register Domains from a Hosting/Server Company.

If you keep them apart there is no problem. The Nameserve remains the same and untouched no matter where your domain registrar is. The MX mail setting is not a problem.

I just moved a bunch of domains from eNom to StarGate and SRSPlus.

At StarGate I set my Nameserver in advance of the move as my default. All domians moved perfectly with no interruption.

At SRSPlus when I transfered in the first domain it ID the Nameserver. After I transfered in all my domains I used bulk edit and confirmed the nameserver. Again all tranfers went smooth and the MX records were not altered.

So, if you are using a Registrar as your host and do not have your own nameserver as with a Reseller Hosting account I would suggest you consider moving them.

Example:
My http://www.CapitalCeltic.com is hosted on a http://www.Kualo.com Reseller Server and the domain Registrar moved from BulkRegister/eNom Reseller to http://www.SRSPlus.com Reseller and the mail MX record is at Everyone.net .

The Domain transfer was smooth and I did not have to touch the Nameserver of MX record.

So if I understand you correctly, if I don't change the nameserver's to NetSol's, my website and e-mails will continue working without interruption. Please confirm.

However, should I want to subsequently want to make a change to the DNS record, I will first have to change nameservers to NetSol's, entailing a 24-48 hour downtime and re-entry of the DNS settings. Please confirm.

If you really want to move with no downtime. (And you know how to set up a zone file!)

Do this:

1 set up an account with someone like zoneedit.com

2. complete the zone file for your domain there. A,TXT,Cname,mx etc

3. at your domain control panel, change the dns entries to those that ZE just gave you. (late nite is best, or when your page is least active) Since your zone file at the old and new dns is the same, there should be no downtime. same info at both sources.

4. start your domain transfer at new registrar. You should be asked for your nameservers. enter the same ones ZE gave you. wait for transfer to complete. Again, no loss, was using ze, now using ze.

5. if you want, now edit the zone file at your new resgistrar to match ZE

6. change the nameservers to your new reg's ns1/2 etc.

I'm now convinced that I want to keep these three services completely independent of each other!

1. My registrar

2. My zone file

3. My webhost

If either 1 or 3 blows up (search for registerfly and netbunch)
I can go to 2 and send my domain and mail to backup hosts.
If 1 or 3 are doing the function of 2, your domain will not resolve and you cannot change it!!!

Zone edit will spoil you, they run DIVERSE nameservers (both not running on your host server-baad idea) and the extra features they give you, that are perfect for those domain emergencies you dread.

Enom has a very good dns package that comes with your domain with them. But most resellers have an api that takes your dns changes and sends them on to the enom nameservers.

by the way, consider giving your important webusers your real ip path to use in emergencies. Name resolution causes lots of problems folks mis-take for server problems. ip url might look like http://0.0.0.0/~itsme - there is no (poisoned) dns used!

good luck,

larry

I hope you're not paying Netsols prices..
If you're not a member of their Gold VIP service call them and ask to talk to
a rep from the Gold VIP dept and tell them you're thinking about transfering
some domains there but you can do it for X amt somewhere else.
They'll give you a price in the $7.00 range and a special phone # for any
future renewels, registration or transfers..
And you you can either change what you want yourself or support will do it
for you.

I'm not quite sure how enom works, so if you dont change your nameservers to netsol and keep using enom's, none of your websites will work as far as I know because I dont think enom keeps DNS records of domains which have moved away from them. I might be wrong.

Some registrar's such as 1and1, let you use their DNS server for all your domains, even if the domain is registered to another registrar.

Does eNom do that?

ANd yes, if you want to change your records (A, MX, CNAME, etc.) at your registrar you have to change your nameservers.

The rule of thumb here is, you have to change your DNS entries at the nameserver your are pointed to. If your domain is pointed to NS1.ENOM.COM, you have to change your DNS records at enom, if your domain is pointed to NS1.NETSOL.COM, you have to change your DNS records at netsol.

Any Registra will let you use their default name server, anyone that types in
the domain winds up at one of their parked pages with payperclick links on it.

Obviously, no one can stop you from doing that.

But what I meant was, not a lot of registrars allow you to add domains from other registrars to their DNS control panel, even if you own domains/services, and actually let you manage records (ex. change MX, A, CNAME, etc...)

NetSol. They'll give you a price in the $7.00 range

I was a Gold VIP member and I never got sub-$7 pricing. How many domains do you need for sub-$7 pricing at NetSol?

Network Solutions reseller division SRSPlus has a price of $7.95.

I have never seen a low per year price at Network Solutions unless you registered for many years, then the discount was very small.

I didn't say sub seven, I pay a flat $7.25 at Netsol.
Did ya know GoDaddy has Executive Accounts also and you get your own rep to work with
plus special pricing..
You can't reg a .GS domain at GoDaddy either but I have You.gs there!
Alot of things at Registras aren't written in stone...
