View Full Version : Domain ownership question and also Reselling them

Someone who is completely computer illiterate is wanting me to set up his website. I've been told that its "best" to let the owner sign up their own domain name and that I not handle that end of things.

Is this a golden rule or am I able to sign him up myself? I would like to do it myself because I have some reseller space on my own webhosting account and I could make some extra (little) cash. Is there any pitfalls to doing this?

This is a friend, so I don't really care if I have to give it up in the future when he wants it back. He's been hounding me about it but I dunno whether to walk him through registration or just doing it for him under my credit card and charging him on the side (+ my time ;) )

Another question is reselling. I don't plan to be a mini "godaddy", but I'd like to ability to sell a name here or there when people approach me, so part time is what I mean. How difficult is this and is it expensive?

I'd like to set up an HTML page on my blog where they can do a WHOIS search like on domain sellers' sites, with an ordering system. Is this possible?

I recently bought some domains from NameCheap. Does anyone know if they offer reseller accounts? I couldn't find it on their site and I heard that they were part of eNom. Is this true?

Sorry for the newbie questions...but thanks in advance!

For your first question, you can find numerous pros and cons right here. My usual
answer to that is that you and the other party fully understand what's going on,
and agree to any and all acceptable terms between one another.

I'm sorry I can't really answer the second one since I'm not into reselling. I'll let a
couple of experienced users handle that.

Your third question is definitely possible. I don't know any specific applications that
can do it, though, but look around.

Namecheap is currently using their Enom reseller account. I don't know if they still
offer their own reseller accounts to end-users.

If you have an open and honest contract or understanding with you friend or any clients that the domain name is theirs and you will manage it there should be no problem. I do this for my clients of which some do not even have a computer. It has a lot to do with integrity.

You can set up a reseller account and sell through you own website or blog via personal contact and use the same principle as above.

You can also look at the Reseller Plan at http://www.StarGate.com which has a Reseller Templete called teh supper site. If you are looking for a small operation that may work for you.

Even if you have a domain with NameCheap and want to use a Reseller Plan from another Registrar you can transfer your Domains after 60 days. The first 60 days are locked from transfer on new domains. It is 45 days on Renewed domains.

Good Luck.

NameCheap's Reseller program costs $50/yr and as far as I can tell, isn't fully operational.

As Ireland mentioned, you can sign up for the StarGate Reseller program for free and get $6.95 registrations. It's a good deal.

What I recommend is this:

1) Get a trusted eNom.com reseller to create a free $8.95 account for you.

2) Log into your new eNom.com account and create a "registry rocket" link. You'll be able to set the prices to whatever you want. Since you know your customers, you can probably charge them $15 or higher, etc...

3) Now point your customers to your registry rocket "link" URL whenever they want to register or manage a domain. They can purchase directly from the site, and enom will process their credit card and pay you the different between your own cost of the domain and whatever you are charging your customer. (Minus credit card fees, etc.)

This is the fastest and easiest way to get a quick sales/management website up and running from a very reliable and well known registrar (enom).

If you have any questions, let me know.

(BTW - If you do it this way, it is *not* necessary to fund your account. If all you are using is the registry rocket system, then you don't need to have an account balance.)

Hosting a friend is a pain in the ***, are you using cPanel?
If you want to sell names you can do it 2 way, either have a bunch yourself
that you're selling on boards, sedo, ect of if you want to register new ones
I'd recommend the GoDaddy reseller at WildWest.
In the long run the few dollars more (I think they charge $90 something a year)
is worth it just in the support you'll need at least at first..
Remember tho Registras don't make their money on registering domains.
They make it on all the crap they push as extras like Privacy Whois, hosting
ect..
