View Full Version : between voxtreme, mchost and splashhost
dreamgear 06-27-2002, 03:48 AM I'm planning to buy a reseller package, and I've spent the better part of a day reading this forum.
Voxtreme, MChost and Splashhost (to a lesser extent) seem to be highly regarded. They all provide the following:
bulk hosting with many or unlimited domains
private ns
ssh
mail forwarding, lists and webmail
linux/apache/perl/php
Splashhost says they do tape backups and provide stats. I sort of suspect the other two do too, but I haven't asked them yet.
My biggest uncertainty is how likely these outfits are to be around in a couple of years. If they died unexpectedly I'd be in a world of hurt, of course. How do you think these three stack up on this criterion?
Another worry is that while their servers are in the U.S. , none of these three seem to be based here. MCHost seems to be AU based and the other two UK based. Why do you think that is ? Should I be worrying about it ?
Any other information you could give me to help me make the decision would be much appreciated.
Finally, are there any other reseller hosts that meet my needs, and that stack up with these three on service, reliability and staying power ?
Thanks...

We're actually Canada-based, but with recently launched sales offices in Australia and France (being expanded into regional support locations in 2003) as well as 2 offices coming in the U.S. next month. Just to clear it up ;)
mdrussell 06-27-2002, 04:14 AM And we're actually based in Dublin, Ireland. :)
To confirm, we do provide stats, and backup servers every night.
Matt
RandyD 06-27-2002, 04:25 AM I'm a user of a Voxtreme reseller package,a nd they have been great. Most of the time their support replies come in a few minutes! And they always follow up on the support questions. Sometimes they solved it, but I forgot to tell them it was ok, so they followed up and asked me again if everything was fine.
flashwebhost 06-27-2002, 04:27 AM MC Host seems to be the best.
Voxtreme.com have good plan.
SplashHost.com won't allow to host unlimited domains
dreamgear 06-27-2002, 10:56 AM Who's most likely to survive major bumps and remain profitable long-term?
I'm sure the proprietors all want to stay in business, but hey, life happens. People fall in love, get married, have babies and sometimes walk in front of beer trucks.
get out your crystal ball...
Alan - Vox 06-27-2002, 11:05 AM People stop working when they have babies, fall in love or get married? If you ask me they are going to work harder because they have more mouths to feed :)
vox-fred 06-27-2002, 11:17 AM Something your not telling us Alan ? :D
dreamgear 06-27-2002, 11:23 AM No, they don't neccessarily stop working when they have babies, but sometimes priorities change.
I'm just looking for either real intelligence (info) or rumor as to who is making money hand over fist, as opposed to who might be running with thin margins or is highly leveraged.
Also, if one outfit has only one owner, and another is a partnership of 5 people, that might be good for staying power.
Picking a host is sort of like getting married... you could always get divorced (God forbid) but it's a real pain in the ass to go through and is bad for the kids (clients).
vox-fred 06-27-2002, 11:45 AM Voxtreme has 4 partners.
All are single and none of us are planning to get married soon :)

Maybe I am not getting married soon, but walking in front of a beer truck, now theres an idea :D

That's why they have employees. Do our employees stop working because they get married and have kids? No ;) I think it all depends how well everything inside the company is organized. Of course, anyone can get hit by a beer truck, but its highly unlikely for a any CEO to do that while working 14+ hours a day.

alohahosts 06-27-2002, 09:05 PM I think they are all good companies that will be around for a long time....
You can't go wrong with any of them.

I'm not sure if your assuming I'm under 20, but if you are...you'd be wrong, I'm 35.

Well marriage is optional in my country ;)
timbo 06-28-2002, 07:43 AM Voxtreme are superb - great support, fast servers and they are from Ireland. What MORE could anyone ask for? Well, aside from a free Irish holiday voucher or something......

Now theres a great idea :D
Morephine 06-28-2002, 10:53 AM Poor poor support...I tried them for a few days and had to move everything off... I am still looking for a good reseller or dedicated server that is priced right and offers some kind of service.:bawling:

How about free Guinness with hosting?
--Jason
vox-fred 06-28-2002, 03:58 PM The export duty would be more expensive than the hosting account :)
Plus how do you package a pint on Guinness ?

I think thats called a can.
Morephine 06-28-2002, 08:39 PM Horrible customer service and slow servers!

Horrible customer service and slow servers!
I have sent you an email this morning but not yet received a reply. Your domain (i looked through our records based on your email address) seems to be running fine on our servers. If you can let me know your ticket ID #'s at complaints@mchost.com , i will look through the responses and get back to you :)
MCHost-Marc 06-28-2002, 08:55 PM Okay, just found your 3 tickets, 2 of them already answered. As one of our techs has replied, your domain is already resolving to our servers, but still propagating. Propagation is while your DNS changes from your old provider to us and until it is completed, usually within 24-48 hours, your domain resolves on both servers.
Based on your tickets:
----- Transcript of session follows -----
554 5.0.0 MX list for domain.com. points back to host.firstclue.net
554 5.3.5 <user@domain.com>... Local configuration error
From your location, it still points to the old server, as firstclue.net is not our server, which means not our servers are slow, but the one you are reaching from your location.
You'll need to give it another 24 hours and everything should resolve fine. If you have any questions, please contact us through the helpdesk :)
i recommend splashhost , i just cant find one complaint . I was with mchost for about 2 weeks . Slow servers and downtime caused me to leave . i think its funny that i still get mchost email concerning downtime and server upgrades
MCHost-Marc 06-28-2002, 08:58 PM Also, based on the helpdesk records we have, all your tickets have been resolved in less than an hour. If due to the propagation mentioned above you have not received the helpdesk email confirmation, please log into the helpdesk and check under Closed Requests.

i am too looking for a small reseller plan. i want to track down my options to 3 to 5 tonight and then go for my choice. what is the biggest company and most like to be around for a long time? i dont want to lsoe everything again as i did twice before. i looked at voxtreme and seen happy customers, looked at splashhost and seen happy customers too but announcement forums full of 'server x crashed', looked at mchost and see a huge forum, looked at ***** and see no forum at all.
hard to choose :bawling:
i would have to say , service is excellent over there . My questions always get answered , and anything i need done gets done with a rather quick turn around time . not to mention , i had a problem with my credit card , alan worked with me while i was getting it straightened out , and i have to say , thats something i have never got from any company and it really impressed me . As for the whole unlimited domains thing , he doesnt do that , but he puts a realistic quota on the account , if you're paying for a 30 dollar account ,and are hosting 60 domains (unless all those domains are yours ) you should get a better account anyways , hopefully you're selling accounts for more then a 50 cents a pop ....
Alan - Vox 06-28-2002, 09:31 PM Yes if you look at the announcements you will see a list of problems. We have serveral servers so there are going to be problems from time to time. When ever a problem occurs i post in the announcements area and try to solve it as quickly as possible, a lot of other hosts dont tell you whats going on.

serious , for all you know , its a huge forum full of complaints , not to say it is , but i wouldnt make a purchase based on forum size
dreamgear 06-29-2002, 10:53 AM I've pretty much decided on voxtreme.
Downsides:
Smaller and a little newer...
use IDE disk drives not SCSI
Upsides:
Seem to give great customer and pre-sales support
faster (to voxtreme.com at least) from my neck of the woods than MChost
Also, I will probably use something like easydns to do a secondary name server for me. $14.95 a year per domain.
Tom Kaplan 06-29-2002, 11:01 PM Good choice. Voxtreme is fabulous; their customer service is incredible...sometimes I've sent support tickets and received responses within the minute, making it almost like a live chat :D
EzSnake 06-29-2002, 11:21 PM Hate to kinda go off topic...
I know this is about these 3 company's...
However (nothin against you guys) are there any host US based that have close if not exact same packages.
I just don't see how a UK based host can be best choice for us based biz and clients (mainly Local Clients).
I have searched forums repeadtly, and keep comin back to these 3 places.
You help is appreciated!!

;) if they were really any good, you would have got the answer back before you sent in your ticket. ;) :D :stickout

hehe. You just need that new Temporal MOD 1.08 installed. :D
"We understand you're having issues with site accessibility currently, or you will be in 48 seconds time. Make sure to check your DNS Zones etc. Also your girlfriend will be visiting in 10.02 minutes, so tell your "female friend" currently "working" with you, that she must leave. ;) :D

I was just going to ask you to mail me the link for this mod, but I see you have already done it :D

Yes, sent that yesterday. But because you already received it, you wouldn't be thinking about asking me to mail it etc... ;)
Aussie Bob has watched too much Star Trek for his own good. :D
I´m with Mchost... and just to tell you guys, their suport it´s great, I´ve never has any major problems, they keep us informed, provide us with signup, status, and helpdesk scripts, also they let me install a custom Cpanel in spanish,,, recently they ugraded our account to 18Gyg trafic at no cost..
What else can i ask for?
I´m very happy with them ... especially after trying other companies with similar packages.
dreamgear 07-03-2002, 11:47 AM I went with Voxtreme.
All is well so far with a minor exception: they seem to be getting slow turnaround from the cpanel folks on a problem they referred there. They probably don't swing as big a stick as some.
mdrussell 07-03-2002, 11:54 AM We swing a big enough stick, it's just a matter of when Cpanel answer our questions. I'll contact Nick later today if we don't hear from them earlier.
dreamgear 07-03-2002, 01:49 PM And as quick as that, they must have received their fix from cpanel, and implemented it for me.
Excellent.
