Hi, I just wanted to get a little input on this. I'm helping out a couple friends who got a Sun Fire V100 Server. I got one of the guys into FreeBSD and so he's really into that. If he had any say on what type of server to get, he probably would have wanted freebsd on it. We have been trying to learn solaris but it's just so different. I don't like everything being binary. A lot of linux platforms use binaries also, but you can atleast compile stuff without having to install gcc usually or get so many linker errors.

Now to the point. What we want to do is install a different operating system. I've been looking and NetBSD and OpenBSD have Sparc and UltraSparc ports, but nothing too stable. I saw something about Sparcs being supported in RedHat 6.2 and I thought this is great. I'm willing to use RedHat, not the same as BSD but it's getting there. I just had a couple questions if anyone could help me out. Do you know if the Sparc version of RedHat will run on the Sun Fire V100 Server? If so, is it stable? I would sure assume so since there is a Sparc CD. Also, is this version the same as normal 6.2? I mean it would probably run Cpanel and everything, right?

I just finally see some hope. I was so bummed when I looked and saw the only half-decent control panel for solaris was usermin. Not that usermin is bad, I think it's great, but it's still in early stages of development and it doesn't have stuff like reseller capabilities.

hmm the redhat 6.2 sparc should be usual redhat, but only noarch/sparc rpms and compiled proggys will work.

I currently use SuSe 7.3 for Sparc and seems to run much faster than Solaris. I actually like the SuSe better than Solaris.

Yeah, I was really thinking about suse. The only reason why I am leaning toward redhat is because of all the control panels available. I haven't seen any available for Suse or Solaris. Also, RedHat has so much more documentation for servers. I am considering it still though, just leaning toward redhat :)

Redhat installes too much useless junk on your server. Just get a *bsd system or some linux distro that installed necessary components not some stupid game crap.

Well I'm planning on doing either a custom installation, or a Server installation and then stripping everything off of it in the part where it asks what packages you want. And believe me, if there was a stable install of BSD that ran on a Sun server, I would go to the data center right now (10:12 p.m.) and sit there for an hour while it installs.
