View Full Version : Do I need a reseller account for ... ?
socalnewbie 06-27-2002, 12:01 AM Hi all,
I'm new to this reseller concept. Somehow, I get the impression based on reading the different forums (fora?) that reseller accounts are only for those who wish to get into the hosting biz.
I'm just looking for a plan that can give me personalized name servers for my yet-to-be-put-up site (just to look big and just plain vanity for my yet-to-be-put-up one-man company), with no intention at all of going into the biz.
Is getting a reseller account the minimum I can aim for? I've seen offers that range from less than $20 to close to $50 a month. Since I'm only after getting a personalized name server, should I just go then for the cheapest reseller plan I can find?
Input from anyone will be deeply appreciated. Thanks!
Techark 06-27-2002, 12:10 AM Pesonlized name servers take IP addresses 2 of em for a ns1 and ns2. To get IP addresses a host has to justify the need for them and as far as I know vanity is not on the approved list of reasons.
So yeah if you want them you are going to have to purchase a reseller account, I would think, but who knwos someone might offer them to you here. I thinkit would be best to purchase a small reseller account that way you can do what you want with no questions really asked.
lets.pretend 06-27-2002, 12:38 AM Have a look at httpme.com (http://www.httpme.com).
Httpme.com offers personalised nameservers, 200 MB space & 2GB transfer at $10/month and you can host multiple domains at no extra cost. They have a reputation for being quite good.
mas3000 06-27-2002, 11:46 PM Ask the host you want to go to, they'll probably give you personalized nameservers for an extra fee.

Most hosts would do that...
HostFox 06-30-2002, 12:57 PM httpme.com look good
The site www.httpme.com is running Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) mod_bwlimited/1.0 PHP/4.2.1 DAV/1.0.2 mod_log_bytes/0.3 FrontPage/5.0.2.2510 mod_ssl/2.8.9 OpenSSL/0.9.6 on Linux.
6 servers, good uptime.
I'm not sure why they have frontpage support on all six servers, but then I'm biased because personally I prefer to use notepad.

As previously discussed on this board, the httpme.com website is (currently) hosted @ mchost (httpme.com have their own servers with NAC). So your post is actually a tribute to mchost instead of httpme.com :)
However I haven't heard of anyone complaining about the service provided by httpme.com, and Aussie Bob is known to be a great guy :)

We have 2 P4 servers in the NAC datacenter for extreme uptime and awesome connectivity and another P4 1.6Ghz, 1Gb RAM server comes online 30 days from now. :)
Incognito 06-30-2002, 10:29 PM Many hosts will offer you that feature at an additional cost, so you don't have to select a reseller plan.

for what??? I hate posts like this. Are we suppose to have to guess what your post is about before clicking on it? No. I think WHT needs to start deleting these types of posts or banning people that use this tactic. I refuse to respond to posts with a "Guess the subject". Ridiculous!

Theirs was a valid question chrisb. It was posted into the Reseller section and was a genuine question. What's your problem?? Your reply is way out of order. They wanted to know all about reseller accounts and admitted being new to the whole concept.
No. I think WHT needs to start deleting these types of posts or banning people that use this tactic.
Please let the mods decide forum rules and policy.

Noone was asking for your input chrisb, although like usual, you felt like we all needed to hear it. :cartman:
chrisb 07-01-2002, 07:20 PM Of course, it's up to the mods to decide. I was expressing my opinion and offering suggestion. JFYI, that's what members of forums do. BTW, I don't recall anyone asking for your opinion either, but you gave it anyway. I think those are some pretty cheap shots from you, Bob. I would guess that you are disturbed because I recently pointed out that your response to a request in the ad forum was outside of the forum rules.
May I suggest that next time before accusing someone else as being "out of line" that you clean up your own backyard.

Quite happy with my backyard chrisb. Thanks for suggesting though. :cartman:
Not really worried about your policing of the ad forums too. I was just pointing out that you attacking a newbie poster to this forum [top post] was way out of line. It wasn't a flame, just an observation. If you want to play Mod, then apply for mod status. :)
ckpeter 07-01-2002, 08:11 PM I want to second Chris's opinion, but not his attitude.
I always find threads that are ambigiously named annoying. Many times I have to decide "should I click on this thread or not?" As you can imagine, a lot of that turned into "Oh, another waste of my click and time."
If I have to voice this matter though, I would have phrased it as a gentle reminder, not a outright criticism.
