Why not try out a free .tk first and see how you like it. I took them up on their offer of up to 3 names free. So far I'm pretty happy. I don't use them heavily, but they're free, they work, they include email forwarding. The free names use redirection/frames, but they allow you to specify key words and other information for the search engines.
After I signed up for a free .tk name, it only took a couple of hours till it started working.
Popups are optional - you can turn them off if you want, or keep them on in order to try to win a free t-shirt. I turned mine off :)
IMHO the .tk name is OK. It seems perfect for you since you're not really concerned about .com or .net. As I said, try it out for free first, you can always purchase the name later if it works out for you.
BTW - What about .ws/.us/.nu/.bz/.tv or some of the other "off-brands"? You can sometimes find these fairly cheap at registrars such as Namecheap.
