View Full Version : Censorship
mkaufman 06-26-2002, 10:22 PM I'm all for keeping this community clean, but come on, the most ridiculous words and company names are being banned.
I don't have a major problem with majorly offending words being banned, but the most commonly used swear words are banned here.
The other thing is the company names, how are people new to webhosting supposed to know which companies not to go with...?
Just my opinion :)
NixHosting 06-26-2002, 10:38 PM Well what happens when babysurfer turns 10 and starts browsing these forums. I don't think his parents want him seeing that.

Aren't there webhosts in here who's "CEO"s are younger then that?

LOL Now that I will have to agree on. Seems the average business owner nowadays has just cleared puberty.
Timothy 06-26-2002, 11:03 PM I don't have a problem with the swear words being banned at all. Frankly, I would think we want to keep things professional here and swearing is just not professional.

The majority of the people here don't swear, and that isn't even the whole point of the topic - what about the company names? And I'm sure those kids knew beforehand what those words mean and that they're bad.

I see your point..but still, company names? come on..
Synthetic 06-27-2002, 12:39 AM If the company names weren't censored, what would you suggest we do instead to notify users of a particular hosts misbehaviors?
appletreats 06-27-2002, 01:36 AM Automatcially add SUCKS! after their name when used in a post, excluding URLs.
Chicken 06-27-2002, 01:46 AM Names are added to the censor list as it isn't difficult to re-register and continue to post their URL on the forum. Censor works well and often we catch 2nd, 3rd, even 4th+ timers re-registering and spamming the forum.
This way they can't post ads and anyone who asks about them is clued into the fact that they have been here and abused the forum.
Someone else said it: Negative publicity is sometimes better than nothing, and this doesn't give them anything. Censors are removed by request within 90 days, except for the gold club spammers.
Incognito 06-27-2002, 05:32 PM If there was not control of those who abuse the rules, then this would become a complete free-for-all and would quickly lose its benefit. The professionalism with which it is run and the level ground established for all is one of the forum's strengths.

I think its better said:
There is no such thing as bad publicity :D
DotComster 06-27-2002, 09:57 PM Cleen is almost as hard to define as "bad" - I like cleener forums myself.

I don't know about CEO - The head of our Rug Rat division - and wana be server admin, and general know it all ;)
Studio64 06-28-2002, 03:01 AM This is simply an economic question.
WHT is a "commerical" entity.
It is privatly owned.
They can do w/ it what they wish.
They could put pictures of dog food up instead of a forum.
There is a market balance here.
If they censor too much. People will leave. They lose revenue.
If they don't censor they open themselves up to spammers. People will leave. They lose revenue.
It's a very delicate and hard balance to acheive. I commend the MOD's for the very fair and balanced job they have been doing. I am extremly impressed with them.
Personally, I don't see why there's a relevant need to use even "the most commonly used swear words" -- while I'd have no objection if they were allowed, their absence certainly doesn't detract anything from the value of the forum.
There are tons of forums and sites where using such words is accepted or even encouraged, so anyone who really has the need to type them shouldn't have too tough a time finding an appropriate place.
As for banned company names, I think it's a good idea and seems to work well more often than it's an inconvenience.
SoftWareRevue 07-01-2002, 11:16 PM Profanity is the efforts of a feable mind trying to express itself forcefully.
itsdestiney* 07-04-2002, 05:46 PM why do they stop us from swearing i mean its just a word im only 13 and i bet you ive heard most of them.......
DanielP 07-04-2002, 06:45 PM Read softwarerevue post and then ask that question :)
Tetraboy 07-07-2002, 06:02 PM It would be better if the name automatically had somethign added to it like companyname(Warning: this company has spammed WHT) Then not only does the poster know that company did something bad so does everyone who views the thread.
Chicken 07-07-2002, 08:43 PM I don't see anything to append a word in the cp. The point is to remove the word from the forum's vocabulary (so to speak) so that the URL doesn't exist.
