What platform should I be looking for a good host to have?


Jeez, I have many questions today.

Also, what is a reasonable amount of monthly bandwidth? I'm just trying to see if these hosts are offering unrealistic amounts for their price. I get about 50 hits a day...hopefully many more soon! How much bandwidth would I need for 100 a day?

Only Unix like platforms are the best for a host (and for me Unix is the best for everything - home, office, work). You can flame me, but still only unix can be a real host.

The best platform for a host to have is Solaris :) thats a real mans unix.

Even though we do all of our hosting on Linux machines, I'm personally of the belief that FreeBSD is rock solid for hosting.

Any of the 75 or so *nix platforms ;)

I second (third?) all those who say *nix. Everyone but William Himself will agree, unless you have some weird needs like MSSQL or something.

Anyway, your other question concerns bandwidth. We can't estimate how much bandwidth 100 hits per day will require unless you tell us what kind of site it is. A home page with one 12K jpg of your dog is a lot different bandwidth-wise than a D&D chat board, let's say, or a download site for MP3s.

FreeBSd is the best...as said by other member, its rock solid...!

FreeBSD. Rocks every which way.

And DG/UX beat the pants off of Solaris, any day. Sadly, Data General was run by accountants (not very good ones at that) and not a marketer like McNealy.

Did you say 50 hits ? Growing 100% to a 100 hits ? Gosh, anything will do then. Even an old Macintosh will handle much much more than what you need.

Strewth - you'd hardly get a single HTML page in it's (massive at the time - probably) 64K of Memory. How things have changed.

My personal favourite was the Acorn Electron - a less functional BBC! You really had to work hard to make programs fit in its tiny 32k of RAM (especially when the video ram took up to 20K of that).

Those were the days.

Maybe atari or commodore also. Last I checked they were still leading the market. Just tough to get your hands on them.
