i was just wondering to myself what is needed if i want to be my own domain registrar, as one of these days i wish to be a hosting provider and a domain registrar. now i know resller programs exsist that allow you to sell domains etc... but i don't want that i want to be my own and just wanted to know what software and hardware is needed?

You will need ICANN accreditation and some software for it. I would probably use existing software, DirectI has LogicBoxes, eNom offers their solution and a couple others have software you can buy/lease not sure on which/details but its out there for people with registrar status to purchase. I would imagine hardware requirements would depend on what system you decide to go with. That is one area I am not too familiar with.
http://www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation.htm has the ICANN details, costs $2500 just to apply.

I advise you to start from reselling. Also directi has a ICANN acrediation program.

yes resselling dose sound the best at this moment in time
the best to take up directi reselling of domains and when you become steady, you can look at ICANN.

Yes I agree with all of them once if you become the stable Reseller then you can proceed with the ICANN Accrediation.

Try reselling Domains from Stargate, Enom or DirectI. Dont go for Registerfly- its crap

You wont need any software, there are predefined websites which you can customize according to your needs :D

With so little profit per domain you need a precise business plan to start making profit from domain selling/reselling
