I am looking for a few places to purchase advertising at. Any suggestions of where to advertise? Ive looked at hostsearch.com but would like other places to look at also.

Search engines, forums, hosting directories etc
Advertise locally, local businesses are a good place to get customers. Try local papers etc.

Try other sorts of forum, ie web developer forums, web designers are always looking for hosting.

Also do a search on here, the subject of advertising has come up quite a lot and i am sure you will find someuseful info.

There are enough places out there to advertise on - almost every site will offer you an ad spot which will bring you the best results :)

The question is what users are you looking for, and what budget do you have...

For popular keywords, Overture can be VERY expensive. Better to find other targeted PPC engines if you wish to go that route. My personal favorite is Sprinks -- but no one agrees with me :) FindWhat.com is also very good.

Myecom.net banner exchange is pretty cheap

I've found SitePoint's prices to be very reasonable. Minimum of 500$ buy, but you get a lot for that package (60K+ banner impressions, ads in 2 newsletters with 50K+ distribution each, customised design for free, etc, etc, etc).

What else has worked well... AdWords has always been faithful, and the new Select program even more so. Basically you want to figure out what group of people you are targetting and find out where they look for information. Blind advertising is useless. We target webmasters who are sick of working with companies who don't give them the service they need. Where do we find Webmasters? SitePoint.

You could equally advertise on FlashKit, Were-Here.com, etc. You could advertise on Hardware sites, on business sites if you were targetting larger companies, in magazines...

The possibilities are endless and the only limitations are your budget and your imagination.

You don't get all that from Site Point for $500. I was quoted around $600 just for two banners to be designed, and that was after paying for 100,000 site impressions. The impressions are valuable, I've seen a lot of bookmarks and a couple of customers as a result, but they save the freebie design work for those who are spending 10k/month. The newsletters are very expensive if you want an ad at the top of the page.

Of course, I could just be getting a lesser deal than others because I didn't push hard enough?

Maybe I was getting a better deal because I'm on the forums staff and write for them, however I know that Matt is willing to negotiate. I didn't say top ads in the Tech Times or anything, however I know they are willing to work with you based on your requirements.

Personally, I will be advertising BareFooting at some point in the future on the forums. Why? It's about 500$ for the smaller section per month, and I know I'll get more than 100K page views. That and creating an identity among the members is a valuable thing because they are our target audience.

I imagine it helps to be on the forum staff and a writer quite a bit. :) Hopefully I can convince Matt to cut me a better deal going forward, as bad as I want to keep the campaign up it is just so bloody expensive.

I am actually running an ad campaign with SitePoint soon also! This is like a reunion :)

I'm doing a 500 dollar test run in one of their newsletters. After that, if it goes well, I'm buying quite a lot of space on various parts of their site.

When advertising on the forums, you advertise on a per-section basis (which match the SitePoint.com sections of build, grow and resources).

Here are the ad rates I got from Matt:

Build Your Site - $2000/month (roughly 500K impressions)
Grow Your Site - $1000/month (about 200K impressions)
Resources for your Site - $500/month (around 80K impressions)

dont forget HostSearch.com, HostCompare.com, TopHosts.com, etc. All the directories are pretty good, but unless you either have enough money to flood the site with your ads, or have really unique deals on hosting plans...you might get just thrown in with the mix. And never get discovered :(

Also, consider some of the pay-per-click engines designed around the hosting marketplace; you'll find mention of them throughout posts on the site.

You should try hostsearch.com I think is one of the big ones.
