View Full Version : Desperate for a Reliable Reseller
scalable 12-14-2006, 08:18 PM I give up. I'm disgusted with Purehost.com. I found a reseller I thought would be the answer. I moved a bunch over to Hivelocity.net. Now they are crashing left and right on me. My customers are screaming. They havent' been able to get emails for 2 days on time. The hivelocity.net site itself crashed today.
Anyway I've been searching here and elsewhere for solid recommendations for a reseller to use and all I find are horror stories. I am a web designer that has a reseller account just to service my clients. I have about a dozen websites. I would like to grow larger, but I'm dying with bad support and reliability.
Anyone wish to enlighten me with a solid hosting company?
I'm paying $100/mo now (2 yr contract ugh) for 30GB traffic 1000MB storage.
Unlimited email accounts - they just can't use it!
Please don't reply if you don't have a few years of reliable experience with a provider. I'm desperate for dependable information.
I have used Miva Merchant, I want to expand online sales sites. I'm also getting into secure sites that use php. My main development tool is Netobjects Fusion.
It has interfaces to a lot of objects........
MY MAIN CRITERIA - Reliable uptime, reliable email.
(I used to work for IBM on a contract with the FAA on air traffic control. Our design guidelines for uptime were 99.999999999% - that was 3 seconds downtime a year! Sorry I dont have billions to spend.)
Thank you...
I'll just give you the obvious advice of never getting into yearly contracts. You always end up losing.
As for your FAA contract, I'm just curious.. was there any logical reason to include 3 seconds of downtime? I can't think of anything that can be fixed in 3 seconds.
Swelly 12-14-2006, 08:34 PM Search around the offers section on WHT. You may find what your looking for there. Also send the company a few pre-sales questions.
Jedito 12-14-2006, 08:48 PM Do you require Miva Merchant? because that will narrow your list a lot on this forum.
scalable 12-14-2006, 09:20 PM It doesnt have to be Miva Merchant - another online sales method is ok if it works well.
I'm trying to avoid buying in the blind. I was hoping to get recommendations based on real experiences, hopefully a couple of years worth at a reseller.
All my research has yielded nightmare stories or glowing recommendations from novice users (not claiming to be a super hotshot myself here).
(As for the FAA contract - that was the design point. Systems had to be designed to be swapped out in real time. Subsystems had higher requirements so that the cumulative total was still 9 9's. The software was designed and written in Ada but that was awhile ago now..)
scalable 12-14-2006, 09:29 PM been there, done that. I went through whreviews.com and hostgator sounded good, then I found horror stories about them too....

Being a big company like HostGator....Brent can't please everyone. You should look at all the good reviews they have....Keep in mind that unhappy customers are more likely to post than happy ones....and they still have tons of good reviews.
Sorry Brent, but ya know ;)
Ireland 12-14-2006, 09:40 PM I would suggest you try KUALO :agree: at http://www.kualo.com .
I have been with them about four years and they are rock solid.
Do a search for them here and read other threads.
scalable 12-14-2006, 09:44 PM Thanks Ireland - hey I'm half-Irish - So I guess I'm half convinced.
I did stumble into netcraft dot com which has actual uptime metrics.. interesting stuff. It also talks about Grid Hosting - now that sounds promising.. it mentions GridServer from MediaTemple - anyone using them? It sounds like a new paradigm that I am looking for...... thanks all...
gate2vn 12-14-2006, 09:53 PM contact Chris at CyberWurx.com. I have started to have one dedicated server with them, and we are collocating our own hardware there now. They're great
Jedito 12-14-2006, 10:15 PM it mentions GridServer from MediaTemple - anyone using them? It sounds like a new paradigm that I am looking for
I don't think so :(, use the search function about mediatemple or the new grid, you'll see the results.
scalable 12-14-2006, 10:16 PM thanks for the suggestions of CyberWurx and Kualo....
oops... i'm now finding major horror stories about "GridServer" ughh
XeHSean 12-14-2006, 10:43 PM Perhaps you should go give RSHosting.com a try - they are very reliable and have true 24/7 support
KNL-BSW 12-14-2006, 10:44 PM First, just because you see a horror story or two doesn't make a company a bad host.
You have to research, read the bad with the good, then realize that 1/2 the good (or more) never tell anyone.
Next, you said E-Commerce + Expanding in online sales sites....
You will want to find a host that can offer you PCI Compliance.
Jedito 12-14-2006, 10:44 PM I found horror stories about them too....
They have over 40.000 hosted domains, you can't please to everyone :)
You may find a negative review almost about any big host.
scalable 12-14-2006, 11:25 PM Xanadu - thanks for the advice... your solution sounded interesting...
until that last line.... Boise State? ? C'mon I'm a Notre Dame grad......
anyone else?
I'm checking out what 'thehostguru.com' has to say as well...

Notre' Dame didn't do bad! But, I live in Boise and watching the team in the same state I live in go undefeated all season and make a BCS Bowl..........
Aside from that ScanAlert has a partners list of companies including a variety of hosting, dedicated server, and I believe VPS companies, that all provide PCI compliance.
You might also check Visa's site for a list of the certified scanners than check those sites for hosting company partners.
Martie 12-14-2006, 11:31 PM Dont forget this...
Contact potential hosts directly with some pre-sales ?
Very important.
SB-Steve 12-15-2006, 12:10 AM just check around this site you will find someone reliable, but i do feel for ya, i know how hard it can be trying to start out and already someone else is making you look bad.
When i was starting out i went through many hosts till i settled into the right home.
jg123 12-15-2006, 12:21 AM The problem with pre-sales questions is that every host promises you the world and it is not until you have problems that you find out the truth about your host.

Well thats a good point you make BUT often times people will sign up somewhere without doing any research at all on said provider. Sending pre-sales ? is just another option you NEED to do when selecting a host (surely not the only one) BUT still important just the same. :D Search here, run the co. name through google.com, etc.
scalable 12-15-2006, 12:55 AM jg123 - I agree. I was hoping to get some real world experiences that were good. I have gotten some suggestions/recommendations which I appreciate.
I've been trying to find a reliable reseller host for my own developed websites and had no luck really in 5 years....
I started with Dellhost, that became Appsitehosting, then PUREHOST which is Pure%@$.
I ventured out to Hivelocity.net with their reseller program (which they dont seem to offer now) and have had huge problems lately. I can't keep doing this
scalable 12-15-2006, 12:57 AM PS I have had 2 websites that were 50-100+ pages and one had hundreds of thousands of hits a month...... I need reliability!!
clanosiris 12-15-2006, 01:17 AM Every company has its horror stories the ones that are established more than 2+ years are usually the ones that will care for their customers through the thick and the thin.
The worst case scenario are companies just leaving clients in the dark with no contact etc...These tends to be companies that are eliminated within the first year or so
inmean 12-15-2006, 03:25 AM I'm using UCVhost dedicate server for 2 years and it doing good i hosted around 400 websites.
scalable 12-20-2006, 06:42 PM Thanks for the input.... if anyone else out there has a recommendation with more than a year experience with - please chime in......
thanks....
jtrivino 12-22-2006, 12:54 AM I use happysupport.com for along time, then i get own dedicated server, it really was a good people in U.K.
