View Full Version : Spammers Changing Default Home Page
labzone 06-25-2002, 01:29 AM I use IE 6.0 and I've recently noticed certain web sites are now able to automatically change my home page to their page without first requesting permission. How are these spammers doing this without my permission?, I'm never prompted to accept the home page change within IE as has been the case in the past. Has anyone else had this problem recently?, I better review my security settings.
Drewcifer 06-25-2002, 01:35 AM it's just a javascript. If you want to stop getting bent over the desk by unscrupulous webmasters, Mozilla 1.0, together with the new anti-trust package from MS is a good way to go. You can even get a skin for it, so it looks exactly like IE!
labzone 06-25-2002, 01:51 AM Mozilla still needs ALOT of work. I have this habit of never installing anything ending with 1.X, I'll let you be the crash test dummie. I feel IE is still the best browser on the market as of today. I changed some of my IE security settings and will see if the problem is resolved.
tagalaxy.net 06-25-2002, 02:27 AM just use Opera (http://www.opera.com).
Then ya dont have any of that problem
added bonus of being much faster than IE and having more features too :)

I totally disagree. The 1.0 mozilla release has rendered IE all but useless.

I disagree, although I'm using the Linux version so I don't know how well it works in Windows, but in Linux, it's simply the best browser available in my opinion, and most pages display the same way they do in IE, especially since I have TrueType fonts installed.
Annie-Mei 06-25-2002, 05:43 AM Just change your security settings to control Active X. If you are setting it lower than medium, you are only asking for trouble.
Dotn need to download a browser when all you have to do is change a couple of settings. Will only take you a couple of seconds.
Get familiar with your browser. then you wont have problems.
Mozilla is okay, dont like it. Netscape ruined their reputation.

I assure you using the default settings in IE 6.0 (meduim security) will only cause you the same trouble ;). It's not necessary to have your setting set to "low" to have this behavior occur. I'm very familiar with ActiveX and Javascript and have fixed my problems.
Go visit this pathetic excuse for a site here (http://www.vac911.com/) and click on an order link, You will find your home page settings changed when using the IE default security settings (medium).
It's so sad when people are so desperate for business they need to resort to these kinds of deceptive things. Don't even get me started on the "back" feature that doesn't function using some sites.

Heh, heh. Am I glad I don't use IE! :D
tazd9t9 06-25-2002, 07:10 AM Also, there is a virus in emails going round atm, which changes your homepage, I had it a while back and the antivirus had a job deleting it.

Wrong. I have had Opera as my backup browser for many years. There are just too many sites it can't read. BTW, go visit the link I posted above using Opera, watch the home page change or the browser crash. If you're lucky.. maybe both will happen :D.
EDIT: Opera crashed the first time I tried to open that web site. It attempted to open the page again after a restart (I thought it changed the home page but did not). Opera has since loaded the page without problems.

My IE6 is set to medium privacy, my homepage is set to about:blank and I visited the site and I ordered something (just as a test) and my homepage was not changed.
Something is wrong with your IE.
I have IE, Netscape, Mozilla and Opera installed because I use the other brands to test my site. I hate Opera, nothing works in Opera, javascript, layouts, etc. Mozilla and Netscape are just good. IE is the best, by far.

I notice that this happens when JavaScripts test for browsers using an algorithm something like the following (pseudocode follows):
if browser is Netscape
do this
else if browser is IE
do that
endif
continue with the rest of the page
Nowadays I rarely encounter this (I surf with Opera 99.9% of the time). Back when I was using 5.0, I used to frequently encounter blank pages (pages that didn't display).
My pages use a lot of Javascript and there is no testing for the browser brand, since it's supposed to work on all of them, no specific instructions used (mainly to open a window when you click a thumbnail - it's not a simple code but it should word in Opera). It works fine in IE, Mozilla and Netscape but it doesn't work at all in Opera. I don't waste my time trying to figure out why because all I read about Opera is that it is faster than the others (what I also have my doubts) because Opera doesn't really give full support to a lot of features the other browsers do. You can test if your Opera works in my pages, but it won't. Test again with IE or Netscape or Mozilla and it will. http://www.viol.net/mohaa
I also ask myself why someone would want to use Opera if it has that stupid and boring huge ad and if you want to get rid of it, you have to pay. Why to pay for an ad-free browser if IE and Netscape and Mozilla are free, and better?
My site doesn't support Opera until it gets better.
fatman 06-25-2002, 08:44 PM viol, your site works fine in Opera. :)

Either you have something wrong with your IE or you authorised a homepage change on another site

comes up nicely with Opera 6
a:\ - My IE is NOT modified by that page.
Atlonim - Good to know, but in mine, the javascript to open windows do not work. I use Opera 6.01.

To allow JavaScripts in Opera to pop-up windows, hit F12 and select "Accept pop-up windows". You must have disabled it when you configured Opera (from File | Preferences), because it accepts pop up windows by default. If you do that, you will find that your menu Contact | Send Me a Message works as normal.
Mozilla, Opera and Netscape allow users to prevent JavaScripts from opening pop-up windows if they so desire.
