View Full Version : OWH - Recent Issues?
OC404 12-11-2006, 12:53 PM I've been using One World Hosting for several years now and up until recently, I've been very pleased. I currently have about 25 sites running with them, and in the past couple months, there seem to be constant, ongoing website availability issues throughout the business day. If I make a point of checking a particular site several times, I may get a 404 error, then immediately recheck it and the site is now available. In almost every instance, the site will be back up before I can contact OWH, but I can expect to have it occur again later in the day. This is not a specific account or server, but true of any of my accounts with them. I thought perhaps it was an issue with my ISP, but it's only occurring with sites I have hosted with OWH. I'm also running into more than normal mailbox issues with them, but nothing like the website availability concern. I hate to leave them, but I'm beginning to think it's time for a change. Before any rash actions, I'd appreciate any feedback from other OWH users regarding recent performance.
Thanks,
~OC~

Thanks,
~OC~Sounds like it may be an apache overload, or they might be experiencing a DoS attack. Hard to really tell when you don't have root access I'm afraid.
I would contact support and ask them to move you to a new server. Will incur some downtime, but it'd be better than intermittent downtime..
Then again, maybe you're outgrowing the usefulness of the shared/reseller environment.
Can you pm me your domain name?
Martie 12-11-2006, 01:16 PM You definitely need to contact their support about it, even if they are back up when you need to contact them. Let them know of these sparotic problems.
If its a case of overloaded server, maybe they can "move" you to another one. Hard to tell.
Good Luck
Swelly 12-11-2006, 01:31 PM I would agree with Martie, see if they can move you to another server. Seems that you have been satisfied with them until recently. Maybe just a mishap that can avoid a complete host move.
OC404 12-11-2006, 01:40 PM Thanks for the prompt feedback. I've tried to nail it down to a specific server, but it doesn't seem to be related. My sites with them are spread over several servers, with no indications of issues being server-specific. As info, their resold accounts are really just discounted accounts, so there is no reason for all of them to be located on the same server.

Swelly 12-11-2006, 01:52 PM hmmm, that seems awkward. I do hope that you get the issue resolved with them. What have they said regarding this issue?
OC404 12-11-2006, 02:38 PM OWH has always been very responsive when addressing specific downtime occurrences, although the response itself may not be exactly specific. Regardless, the situation has not improved.
Swelly 12-11-2006, 02:44 PM Well I do hope they find a resolution to your problem there. It would be unfortunate if you have to leave a provider you have been with for so long. However, if the service has not been what you have come to expect then your right, it's time for a change. Good luck to you!

Wouldn't really matter, if the sites were spread about different machines. However, site specific problems could have something to do with the machine itself.

There may be a golden apple, there may not.

You're right, I need to try that. I have not up until now, because there were no indications it was a server-specific issue, and I don't really have enough data to cherry-pick a server. I'm going to monitor a specific site heavy for a few days, then request a move, but it's still just a swag. Thanks for the feedback.

~OC~Very welcome.
I hope everything works out.. And watch those "cherrys".. Don't want to pop any..
nyckidd 05-03-2007, 10:21 AM I've been with OWH for several years, and up until the past 6 months or so things had been great. As of late, I also have been seeing regular outages that are usually brief in duration but are happening often enough now that I'm getting concerned.
By outage I mean the server becomes completely unreachable. Web, SSH, mail, all unreachable.
Additionally, I'm experiencing regular mail server issues as well, where the mail server seemingly cannot get a file lock on the server and therefore I cannot retrieve my email via pop.
For the mail issue, I contacted OWH several times via their online help ticket system. On a couple of tickets I received no response. Most recently I got a response that blamed this on 'other accounts with large mailboxes' being open at the same time and that it was an issue they were working on. They did not address my concerns about the earlier tickets getting no response.
I'm not sure what's going on there, and unfortunately, I don't have alot of time for dealing with these issues at the moment. In fact, if I had the time, I would have probably been transferring my sites elsewhere already, as OWH is **FAR** from economical. I cringe when that charge hits my card each month. :)
I will be contacting them via phone as soon as I have the free time.
To the original poster, should you read this, has your experience improved?

Sorry for the delay in responding; I haven't been in here in awhile and the email notification got rerouted to junkmail. Yeah, with a couple rare exceptions, I've seen a big improvement. I even discussed it with their tech support, but didn't get any confessions or major admissions of prior problems. I agree with you, email issues had been a biggie for awhile. I did run into a couple situations that appeared to be server-specific, and they did not hesitate to move the related sites when I asked.
FWIW, my experience with their support ticket issues have always been positive. In fact, about 90% of the time, a real person will answer the phone if you call, and actually listen to what you say. If it had not been for the responsiveness of the support folks, I would have probably bailed sometime ago. Like you say, they're not cheap, and the downtime was frustrating. That appears to be much improved. :)
