I was wondering if any of you guys ever use used computer parts for your servers or any other computer related equipment or if you get good pricing on new cpu parts ?

Good pricing or not I would never place used parts in one of our servers. You have no idea the history on the part nor how long before it could fail.

It is well worth the money to invest in new components and then do "burn-in" tests or have them done by the provider of the parts.

Hardware is so cheap these days it doesn't make sense to use older used parts. It also screws up your warranties etc.

I'm happy to re-use older motherboard that we have bought but as for buying in second hand stock...the savings just aren't worth it. Even brand new hardware I've bought has failed so just pay the extra bit and get new. It will soon pay off in remote hands fees etc

The way I see current trends is that yes for ram, hard drives, other parts etc you're getting such great pricing compared to years ago for new computer parts that it outweights the risk of using used computer parts. For non mission critical, personal use or really expensive IT items and computer parts you can find some really great deals on used parts. for me it's 90% of the time new parts, 10% although not an accurate guess, would be about the most used IT equipment I'll purchase (example I bought my laptop basically new yet it was second hand, those are purchased where you use common sense and facts and you save a bit of money for the same thing)
