I was just sshed into my server and was doing some random tasks.

I got bored and decided to tracerout my own domain. After that I did a traceroute on another domain on my server. I was expecting them to be the same but they weren't.

I then tried a traceroute to a third domain on my server, and there was only one hop

Is there some sort of simple explanation for this?

Well, actually there is nothing wrong with this. This is multi-homed network at work.

For a web host with multiple uplink network provider, the best path is being used each time. Probably that is why you got different paths each time.

Your domains are in two different places wf4.dnsvr.com is located on a server at rackshack, in the Dallas Fort Worth area:

17 p15-0.core01.dfw01.atlas.cogentco.com (66.28.4.25) 95.059 ms 95.429 ms 94.773 ms
18 p13-0.core01.iah01.atlas.cogentco.com (66.28.4.98) 95.327 ms 94.923 ms 94.824 ms
19 g8.ba21.b000605-0.iah01.atlas.cogentco.com (66.28.66.238) 95.316 ms 95.190 ms 95.383 ms
20 Everyones-Internet.demarc.cogentco.com (66.28.28.210) 95.678 ms 95.777 ms 95.683 ms
21 tayhou-223-34.ev1.net (207.218.223.34) 92.310 ms 92.047 ms 92.299 ms
22 wf4.dnsvr.com (216.40.201.216) 95.997 ms 99.578 ms 94.112 ms

Notice the DFW, that's the airport code for Dallas, and Everyone's Internet is the company that owns Rackshack.

The second server, wf.dnsvr.com, is with LogicWorks [nee Digital Telemedia] in New York:

9 nyc-gw2.dti.net (206.252.135.5) 3.670 ms 1.689 ms 1.695 ms
10 209736133.client.dti.net (209.73.61.33) 5.228 ms 4.540 ms 4.250 ms
11 wf.dnsvr.com (209.81.71.83) 5.191 ms 8.062 ms 7.552 ms

NYC is the airport code for New York, and dti.net is Digital Telemedia (now owned by LogicWorks.

So, the reason your traceroutes look so different is that your servers are in different places.

I don't understand when you say my domains are in two different places

wf4.dnsvr.com, IP Address 216.40.201.216, is bound to a Rackshack server in Texas.

wf.dnsvr.com, IP Address 209.81.71.83, is bound to a LogicWorks server in New York.

I can see that, but the fact that they are in different places is what I don't understand. The sites for each domain are located on my own server which is not at rackshack. Maybe I'm missing something

If your domain is: dnsvr.com, then no they are not. You have hosts on servers all over the place:

If your domain is something else, then tell us to which domains you are trying to trace.

By the way...those PTR records make no sense in this zone file, get rid of them (although I could be wrong about that...hopefully Tim or David will come along and correct me :D).

dnsvr.com is not my domain, though, for some reason, traceroute seems to default to it on all but one of the domains on my server

post your domains or maybe PM it to someone asking. they're trying to help, but, your answers are a tad vague.

Sorry about the vague answers, and I thank all of you for your help :)

I dont think the domains on my server would be appropriate to post here w/o the permission of a mod. (adult content)

skylab

ahhh. hmm. well, feel free to PM them to someone who has offered to trace or PM me, i can provide a few traces from europe.

or give a try to www.traceroute.org to trace from multiple places.

WoodShedd

Thanks, skylab.

I figured it out. All the domains that tracerout to dnsvr are using zoneedit domain servers.
