View Full Version : Received virus from dedicated@cyberwings.com ??
NC_TOM 06-21-2002, 02:09 PM I signed up for Cyberwings hosting yesterday and today I got an email from dedicated@cyberwings.com with multiple viruses in it. I'm not trying to flame Cyberwings or anything but I'm wondering why would I be getting something from that address the day after I sign up for their hosting services?
DynastyHost 06-21-2002, 02:17 PM I'm sure they didnt' do that on purpose. Maybe your Anti-Virus program gave a false alarm?
NC_TOM 06-21-2002, 02:20 PM I'm not trying to flame Cyberwings in any way (I'll be hosted with them for at least 1 year) but here's what my inbox says (it appears that there was a virus in the html code as well as a virus attachment)
Date:
From: dedicated <dedicated@cyberwings.com>
To: tomlg@olypen.com
Subject: Meeting notice
THE HTML CODE IN THIS MESSAGE MAY CONTAIN A VIRUS, THEREFORE IT IS NOT SAFE TO DISPLAY. YOU MAY WISH TO CONTACT THE SENDER AND NOTIFY THEM OF THE INFECTION.
Attachments:
audio/x-wav; name=N`Sync -_I_Believe_In_You (Feat. Joe).exe
DynastyHost 06-21-2002, 02:23 PM N`Sync -_I_Believe_In_You (Feat. Joe).exe
Hm... that's interesting. Why would a host sending out N'Sync related .exe?
Email them and ask them about it.
RackNine 06-21-2002, 02:28 PM That looks like the old Nimda virus. If you remember it's the one that took random filenames on your computer and forwarded a viral email to others.
If this is the case then someone at cyberwings listens to N'Sync, some might consider that flaming material in itself :)
Sincerely
-Matt
Could be Nimda, but could be Klez; fore more info on both check your favorite
anti-virus manufacturer's web site.
Btw, check the headers of the email to make sure that the email was sent from
cyberwings; some viruses use random address from the addressbook as From: address.
adammc 06-21-2002, 04:44 PM I've been with cyberwings for ages...never recieved html email from them, so it's more than likely fake. You should definately report this to cyberwings.
tazd9t9 06-21-2002, 04:49 PM yeah i got the klez virus from abuse@friendsreunited.co.uk
if i didnt have outlook setup to not autosend emails then my customers would have all got the virus too.
I get virri all the time, once from some one I was giving support to. I had to email them back that they were infected, and include instructions on how to get rid of it. They emailed me back and asked (as close as I remember the wording of it) "What is this anti virrus program, people keep telling me I need one?"
and that is why I read all my email in a text only email reader.
I never have to worry if my AV is up to date, because I delete most email right off the server, without Dling it.
In fact, my email client is set to send only. I just preview the email right on the server with my text only email reader, copy and paste it in my email client to reply, hit send, and then I automatically have a copy of what they sent me, plus my reply.
Alex[nl] 06-23-2002, 05:19 AM "What is this anti virrus program, people keep telling me I need one?"**Sigh**
And imho it looks like a virus too, and I'd be surprised if cyberwings sent it out itself... the email address you recieved it from was probably on the infected persons' computer .. check the IP it was sent from to see if it is from their network at all ...
hbouma 06-23-2002, 05:43 AM There has been a rash of email viruses being sent on lately. (Probably klez based). I've been getting 8 to 10 of them a day in my mailbox. Many times, the from address has been spoofed as well. So the email you're getting might not even be from cyberwings. But everyone should be on alert for virus infected emails.

davidb 06-23-2002, 05:56 AM I got one from someone I was talking with at verio, just email em back and tell em
skylab 06-23-2002, 06:47 AM how about looking at the headers and/or posting them here?
the headers of the email can tell you where exactly the mail is coming from and who sent it. i hardly ever pay attention to from: anymore when i get spam or virii in my inbox.
iamdave 06-24-2002, 06:11 AM Best solution, is to not keep an address book, like me.:stickout

Best solution, is to not keep an address book, like me.Actually, that won't help at all against many of the current crop of email worms, which find email addresses in other places besides your address book; most significantly in your internet history and temporary files. That's another thing that won't really help, because most of these programs -- including Klez -- include their own smtp engine and aren't using Outlook or any other email program you may have installed. Not using Outlook, though, does mean you have no chance of Outlook's vulnerability (in some versions) to such attachments being executed without you specifically and purposely opening them.
TimPD 06-24-2002, 10:33 PM They must have gotten it from someone else.
