View Full Version : Email port 25 blocking

Hello,

I am a reseller and have started to recieve complaints from clients with notebooks, when they move from their normal providers area of coverage their email can not be sent out. They are using the incoming and outgoing pop server which comes with their webspace. In the past I have recomended this setup, it gave them access to their account from anywhere.

Lately though there has been a trend by the broadband providers to block outgoing mail on port 25, this creates a problem for my mobile clients.

I realize why the providers are doing this, but I am wondering if there is a work around for this. Being a reseller I can't change the port of the email server. The clients could use their webmail I guess but they would rather just use their local email program as usual.

Any thoughts...

Thanks

The clients could either use their ISP's smtp server (which should be available for them) or you can ask your provider to allow smtp use on an additional port.

Your host should have port 26 setup for smtp for just this reason. Email them and ask or to check simply do a telnet domainonyourserver.com 26 and if it connects its already setup.

Simon,

I realize they could use the providers server but that is not where the problem is, it is when they are out of their providers area of coverage and would not have the credentials needed to use the outgoing mail server.

The additional port request could work though.

There's no should in play. A provider can opt to open and assign an additional port for SMTP, but they are just delaying the innevitable by dodging the ISP's requests :)

Some providers will have an extra port, others won't. Most cPanel providers do simply because it's a little checkbox in WHM (that many don't think has any ramifications).

One of the most used alternative ports is 587. I believe that's the one which has been assigned to client SMTP use in the RFC I read a while ago.

IMAP is always a good alternative. ;)

Regardless, a simple change over to port 26 should fix the problem, if not contact the ISP.

If your host is not accepting this port 26.

I have some customers that signed up for a http://www.fastmail.fm member accout and use that server and adress for just smpt mail via port 26.
Ok it costs 15$ setup but then it's there and no extra cost.
