Chicken 02-07-2001, 11:05 AM Your site loads up fine, I think it is just something blocking packets when you run the trace. I once asked about this to Steve (different host)...
eva2000 02-07-2001, 11:15 AM yeah it's back to normal now... but before it took ages to load my site and vdi.net
KDAWebServices 02-07-2001, 11:29 AM VDI has just been hit with a big DOS again against one of their servers which is why it was slow.
eva2000 02-07-2001, 11:52 AM oh dear... that would be a pain in the ...

karl is there any reason why when i visit http://www.hostsource.net/ a cpanel log in popup, jumps up in my face twice ?
DanielP 02-07-2001, 12:16 PM It has to do with those two images in his poll....
Cpanel basically has keywords in apache to what it will load.
So if you named a .htm file cpanel.html and visited it, cpanel would want you to login..... :)

Cool, another hosting info source. But fix that cpanel login prompt. :D
graceg 02-07-2001, 12:17 PM After running stably for about 40 days, our mail server have been down today for 6 hours. Don't know if it has anything to do with the DOS attack.
Imperum 02-07-2001, 01:29 PM jes, eva2000.com me to... if we gone to a html.page called .cpanel.html the server ask for ID and PW of cpanel.
This happens also if we go to a page that has a .gif called cpanel.gif. .... so we have remaned the web pages and .gif immages... :)
But i think problem has ben solved.
eva2000 02-07-2001, 01:53 PM gotta make sure i don't name anything that way then :)
KDAWebServices 02-07-2001, 06:30 PM We are aware of the problem but seen as the site has yet to properly open and neither Jeff nor myself have had any time to work on it, we weren't to concerned.
William 02-07-2001, 08:35 PM If anyone is bored and wants to see what a Dos attack looks like :) The one that happened this afternoon =;oP
http://entropy.darkorb.net/mrtg/216.10.0.1_3.html
We did remedy pretty quickly, it was a very big one, and it shook the building and spilled my coffee :)
Also i was bored yesterday with the camera and took some new pictures of the VDI data center. I finally took a picture of my office"so many people wanted to see".
Since there are so many people in WHT that have servers here i thought it would be nice for them to see thier servers.

**Notice no Hemp in the pics:)
People always ask me "how can they stop a dos attack"
Answer - "Don`t piss someone off"
kunal 02-08-2001, 01:47 AM wow... you guys are higly prone to these eh? how come?

how do you read that graph anyway ? is bandwidth in the figure you read ? :)
KDAWebServices 02-08-2001, 07:31 AM Look at the blue line on the first graph, can you see the huge spike? Well that was 80mbp/s of data.
eva2000 02-08-2001, 07:52 AM i see... 80+ mbps
just curious does vdi pay for that DOS attack bandwidth ?

Like i said before, DOS attacks are from people that are pissed off. There is no Magic Anti-dos botton to stop it. THe only thing you can do is track it, dump the packets and call the "ISP" that the DOS comes from.
Example of a way to piss people off:
Have a Website that has pictures of little cute Kittens being jammed into tiny bottles and call it art.

Of course we have to pay for that bandwidth in 1 form or anoher.
AlaskanWolf 02-08-2001, 11:42 PM I am considering VDI, from a hosting companies perspective, how would you rate them on the following
1. Uptime per month?
2. Tech Support?
3. NOC avail (24 hours a day?) (do they answer emails 3 am)?
4. speed to your servers
5. constant attacks such as dos ect?
Thanks!
kunal 02-09-2001, 10:16 AM William, agreed. I dint mean to say you guys were incompetent or anything. What I meant was, the network itself was getting atacked to many times. A DOS attack is something you cant control nor stop. All I can say, is Good Luck with them :)

We are moving our 2 dedicated to Vdi into a rack, and placing more co-located machines in less than a month. I'll keep you posted it you'd like to get in touch.
We only deal with resellers, use to supply (and get) a high range support to our customers.
Our tests returned a good server speed and a not bad trouble ticket support, not excellent as well for the ones who are use to get it also by Icq or get answered by fast emails.
Securety is a problem everywhere.
I think general considerations are positive, just look at the future not too worried.
bye
