View Full Version : Dedicated hosting recommendations?

We have an educational website where we post daily news articles, activities, intranet-like email messages, and much more for students and are looking to move it to a reliable hosting company.
We need a Managed Dedicated server solution as our website is mySQL database driven and we'll have many students logged on at the same time.
I think the following configurations will suit our needs for now on a Linux, RedHat server.
Hardware: PIII 1.26 Ghz; 256 MB SDRAM; 2 x 18 GB SCSI HD.
Software: Apache 1.3.24; PHP 4.2.1; MySQL 3.23.49; FTP and root access to the server, something to check stats and handle email. Daily tape backup is critical and firewall maybe optional for the next couple of months.

I've been looking at superb.net and verio.net.
Anyone have any experience with either of these hosting companies using them as a dedicated host? Do you have a better recommendation? I saw some complaints about verio's customer service and tech support on some forum (I forgot which one). How do they rate? Haven't seen too many complaints about superb. Is their customer/tech support good?

I don't know a lot about servers, etc. and I feel very stronly about having support for the server and website. If something goes wrong, or our site won't come up for some reason or another, I want to know that there will be someone to talk to and help me get through the issue immediately. We really can't allow for any downtime and reliability is crucial.

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can supply.

Why do you recommend them? What part of their plan stands out above the rest?

Thanks for your help.

... RackSpace does managed solutions and has a VERY good reputation.

If you want unmanaged but stil lquality you should f.e. check into prioritycolocation.com or fdcservers.net

Thanks for your help. I actually looked into them. I'll do more research.

the second post out of your total 6 posts about this company. is it your company? their prices are outrageous for what you get in return.

anyhow.
you could check into www.nocster.com
good network, managed servers starting at $99 a month. i don't quite think they have as powerful a machine as you're looking for however, but i'm sure they'd have something you can work with or could work with you on something.

If you want a custom built solution suggest you at least have a look at dedipower http://www.dedipower.com. I have an unmanaged server with them - and still get excellent support. They have a live support link on their contact page - have a chat with someone on there - see what they can do.

if you need a very powerful server, u can try dialtone.com

they have great customer service (24/7 and I am pretty sure of that) .

but their bandwidth charge is very very very expensive ........
I paid over 1000 bucks every month for that shi... so I moved most of my domains to serverbeach

superb.net has good support and reliability. If you can afford it - go for it:)

I suggest you use Apache 1.3.26; PHP 4.2.1; MySQL 3.23.49 not Apache 1.3.24; PHP 4.2.1; MySQL 3.23.49

No real shocker to those in this thread but IPs matched an email sent to support. Spammer caught. Spammer banned.

You need Rackspace (www.rackspace.com) they are the best for managed dedicated servers. They have 24/7 system admins, and have had no downtime in like 3 years. They might be expensive, but they sure are worth it.

roly, Thanks for bringing the Apache version to my attention. I actually need the latest "1.3" version and thought it was 1.3.24.

To the rest of you, thanks for all your input. It really helps to learn from your experiences.
I guess now I'm down to Rackspace vs. Superb. Although Verio salesrep seems to be extremely aggressive and their network and hardware seem to be solid from the research I was able to do but I didn't see anything overly positive yet about their tech/customer support.
I am going to compare the exact costs on the quotes I got from each of these companies.
If anyone else has any firsthand experience (tech support, network speed, reliability, etc.) I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks for all your help.

Rackspace.com would be a good choice for sure. There are a few things that stick out.. support, quality and price. :P

I want to make sure I got this rule *straight*.

Someone asks for hosting recommendations, I run a host and recommend mine.

And THAT is Spam? That’s not allowed?

I think he is referring to himself being banned.

Of course this is not allowed. If this is allowed, every host will come in and recommend their own service. This is why there is a hosting request forum. Otherwise, every post will be swamped with 10-12 hosts "recommending themselves".

The rule is there for a reason. And if a person posts in the main forum, then he is looking for recommendation from other user, not the host.

You got the rule *straight* now? Someone asks for recommedations and SHOCK they don't want to hear from you, recommending yourself and spamming the forum.

By the way, if you ain't got it *straight* I give free private lessons.

1: It's not spam you idiot, it a rules violation.

2: Your a nazi.

3: Your the king of your own little board, aren't you.

And a second one with a suggested activity...

Ohh. and one more thing.. Go **** Yourself.

My my my what dirty mouth little monkey. Apparently the guidelines shouldn't apply to him, only the rest of you.

Anyone is welcome to call me anytime, though I won't do 'live forum support' via phone, heh. Of course I hung up on him, I've heard it countless times, as I said, it gets rather boring.

Thank you all for your input.
We went with Rackspace and have been with them for a little over 3 months now and very impressed.
We've had no downtime, and their fanatical support is just great!
Very helpful technicians, always available.
They've been a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend them.:)
