View Full Version : Top Hosts By Customer
allan 06-20-2002, 10:49 AM I know that most here don't have actual numbers, so I am relying largely on perception here. Who do you think the top 5 hosts, based on number of customers, are in each of these categories:
Shared Hosting
Dedicated Hosting
Colocation
mdrussell 06-20-2002, 12:27 PM I can probably only do top three, it's quite a tricky question. Would you, for example, consider Inflow and all it's datacenters, and class people that lease cages / large areas of their datacenters as colocation customers?
What about companies such as Level3? They are a telco, but own datacenters and lease space too.
Shared:
NTT / Verio
CI_Host
Interland (& it's subsiduaries)
Dedicated:
Rackshack
NTT / Verio
CI_Host
Colocation:
Level3
InterNAP
UUNet

Matt -- the answer to both questions is yes :). I don't necessarily expect the correct answers, I am more trying to gauge people's perceptions on the subject.

Aha, now I get you. Probably should have taken more time to read your original post.
I'd be interested in your views on this, you probably have a greater knowledge of this, plus with your 'contacts', I'm sure you have a pretty good idea :) Please PM me if you don't want to post your views yet...

Actually, maybe my thoughts will garner more interest in the topic, people can tell me what a dumbass I am :D:
I'm going to cheat, and break it into 4 categories:
1. Shared (in no particular order):
Interland
Interliant
CI_HOST
NTT/Verio
Hostway (though I think they are Verio)
2. Managed (in no particular order):
IBM
Digex
Hostopia
RackSpace
EDS
3. Dedicated (in no particular order):
Rackshack
Superb
AIT
Affinity
Interland
4. Colo (in no particular order):
Level3
InterNAP
UUNet/WorldCom
Exodus/C&W
Abovenet/MFN
What are other's thoughts on this list?
allan 06-21-2002, 10:33 AM Don't be shy, I really am curious
allan 06-21-2002, 03:26 PM It looks like Tier 1 had the same thought that I did:

I'm curious as to why RackShack is not on their list (it wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that Tier1 is partnered with RackSPACE...naaah?
mdrussell 06-21-2002, 03:31 PM Allan, I think you cheated.... pfff
No one else wants to share their views...?

That's okay Matt, you and I can develop our own list, make some pretty graphs and charge people $1200 a pop for them :D.
Sheesh...so how does one get in on that analyst scam ;)?

Better keep it quiet, or people might catch on ;)
I've never been a sucker for analysts, I think most of their analysing is pretty subjective anyway....
ScottD 06-21-2002, 04:00 PM I think most of their analysing is pretty subjective anyway....That's why it's called Analysis instead of Research. It's a whole industry dedicated to pulling the whool over your eyes. I think the best analogy to date is "Analysts have statistical evidence that breathing is the #1 cause of death, while not breathing simply quickens the pace." Prove it wrong? :)
Sorry to go so far off topic!
