I have a client who wants to transfer their domain and account to another hosting company. Can I transfer the domain myself or must they request the transfer and then I allow my software (directi) to do all the work.

Hi,

you don't transfer the domain yourself. You should remove the 'Clienttransferprohibited' flag first, alss known as domain-lock. Then at the new registrar you should look for 'transfer a domain' or any related forms, then you supply the domain to transfer and follow the steps.

Personally, I'd advise against transferring their domain registration and webhosting to the same company. I'd open up an account with a registrar/reseller of your choice. Transfer your domain there BEFORE even telling you current webhost they are going to lose your business. After the domain transfer has been completed, only then is the time to sign-up with another webhost.
