I need some creative minds here ;)

I am trying to come up with a business name for an Internet consulting company. It needs to have a "professional" feel. I've been going through online Latin and Greek dictionaries to see if any keywords translate into something usable. Unfortunately, the few I have found are already being used by other companies and/or the matching domain name is in use.

I realize there are some naming companies out there, but as a small start-up business, I have no where near the $85,000 they charge!

If anyone comes up with something that I decide to use, I'll try to come up with some kind of "finders fee :)" for you!

Initially the business plan is to focus on small companies looking to expand their business to the web. This includes businesses just wanting a general info page out there to those wanting to set up ecommerce.

Are you going to position yourself primarily as a design company, or more like a facilitator (i.e. here is the process, here are the things you have to worry about, here is where you can host your site, and if you want an ugly page I'll make one for you, otherwise I have these great design partners)?

Definitely more like a facilitator. My personal design skills are severely lacking!

Your name does not have to have anything to do with the internet -- you might also consider using 'principles' or other attributes of your company or staff.

In '96 I had the same challenge... and there were more domain names available then as well, and it was hard. I missed by one day obtaining my first choice - a Xerox spin off company got it.
C'est la vie.

For us concepts such as teamwork, respect (for staff, clients, vendors) etc were important. We came up with a name that took a word similar to a concept and then added an "a" on the end et voila, new company name.

A dictionary, thesaurus and search engines may be your best friends during this process.

ps and for us, having the domain name available was a must.

I agree that it doesn't have to imply Internet or systems for that matter. I've been thumbing through both dictionaries and thesauruses.

It would be nice to have the domain available, but there are always options if its not. For example, if MyCo is the name, but myco.com is taken, theres always mycoweb.com, 4myco.com, etc to try.

Here is my thought on dealing with local companies:

Your name means everything. My experience has been that when using a local company people deal with the person. My wife and I don't deal with our accounting firm, we deal with Joe Bullock, we don't have a law firm we have a lawyer: Keith Troxell.

Locally, I find the consultants who are successful are those that get their name out there, and one of the ways to do that is to name the company after yourself. I am afraid Stargate's whois server is not functioning properly, otherwise I would pull your information from their records to give you an example -- but I am sure you get the idea.

Anyway, just my thoughts :).

I have thought of doing that... the only problem is that I don't have an easy to pronounce last name (like Jones, Smith, etc.)

On the plus side, I guess, once my clients learned how to pronounce my name, they would know the company as well :)

re using your name - I'm in agreement with that too. Just depends on whether you intend to be a multiple consultant org or not. My firm started out as three partners, we have 14 staff in total now - since that was the plan from day one, a generic 'concept' name was a better fit.

= extraarca - outside the box
= novorota - lightly translated to 'reinvent the wheel'


Man... All I can think of... There are so many great Latin names taken up already... Those are the only ones I can think of and those are pushing the bounds of decent translations
