Hi, i registed my first domain with dotster.com... and eventually i found out that there are much cheaper place to get one registered...

I so far have found godaddy.com... but a few times when i visit the site, the page seem to be rather slow or unavailable...

also, i found this forum... ;)

I wanted to know, if the company goes out of business, and I registered domain names with them, will i still be the owner of the domain, if yes, how do i regain the control over it?

It's not likely for Dotster or any registrar to go out of business easily, It is possible, but highly unlikely. However, if it does happen don't fret, your domains will be safely with Network Solutions. :bawling: :eek2: :crying:

That's if an ICANN-approved registrar goes out of business... which, as you stated, would be highly unlikely. And I've read postings by others in these forums suggesting that the domains could go to some other ICANN-approved registrar of ICANN's choosing. Then I read people arguing back and forth which would be the case and I don't remember reading a definitive answer. Do we really know which it is? Would they got to Verisign (Network Solutions) or could they go to any other ICANN-approved registrar?

If the registrar that goes out of business is actually a reseller of an ICANN-approved registrar, then the answer is that the domain owner would simply become a direct customer of the ICANN-approved registrar for which the defunct company was a reseller. Thereafter, if the ICANN-approved registrar's prices are much higher than its defunct reseller's prices were (which would be very likely), perhaps the domain owner could convince the ICANN-approved registrar to refer him to one or more of its other resellers and his names could be transferred to the new reseller's account and the domain owner would then become a new customer of the newly-referred-to reseller.

The point is, the domains don't just disappear or go into limbo. You don't lose them or lose control of them. But I'll bet it would still be a pain in the rear for the domain owner if a thing like that happened. Has it happened? Are we aware of any ICANN-approved registrar that has gone belly-up? What about resellers of ICANN-approved registrars? Anyone know of any? And, if so, does anyone have any first- or second-hand stories about how their customers fared?

Well, when I said safely with Network Solutions I was implying the fact that NSI would probably buy out the registrar just as they have done with Registrars.com and other registrars.
