View Full Version : Where should I register a domain for use with a different host?
Phool 06-20-2002, 03:18 AM I want to register a .com domain, and use it for hosting with a different company. I don't know how transferring domains works and I want to be able to use it with my host immediately. Someone please explain where I should register it and how to transfer it :)
BTW: I would like it to be as cheap as possible :)
xerocity.com 06-20-2002, 03:47 AM Although more expensive, I recommend Register.com (http://www.register.com).
Their contol panel is one of the best in my opinion.
Hiccups 06-20-2002, 06:57 AM SimpleUrl (http://simpleurl.com) $12 per year or less. Once you have your domain name you can log into your account and make your dns changes. Good support there if you run into any problems or have questions about how to do things.
I use www.domainguru.com the domains are reasonable and support is great!!!
A lot of folks I know also use www.000domains.com
barrywien 06-20-2002, 08:12 AM I would suggest GoDaddy.com even though i have never actually used them.
With regards to transfering a .com domain name to host with another firm, all you have to do is change the Nameserver settings. Once thats changed (with the new hosts nameserver names of course) then your new host will be in control of the domain and you will be able to start uploading files...
Knight_ 06-20-2002, 09:35 AM I just registered my .com domain with go daddy, no probs with credit card and in their FAQs is explained well with screenshots how to change the name servers to host your site with a different company. Just yesterday evening i wouldnt have known how to do it but now it seems pretty simple :)
Knight_ <- total newbie over here :stickout
tagalaxy.net 06-20-2002, 04:58 PM GoDaddy or 000Domains work great, and the prices are nice :)
Russel 06-20-2002, 05:07 PM I use been godaddy for awhile now and i dont have any complaints
d3fuse 06-20-2002, 05:08 PM Yea, I would go with GoDaddy.com. They're have good tutorial FAQs on things and they are good in price. Good place for someone new to the thing.
DotComster 06-20-2002, 05:33 PM Sorry xerocity.com
Register.com are now active domain squaters :(
True they are fast and responsive - but if your domain expires they sometimes keep it and offer it for sale - as did NetWorkSolutions. Some of my customers lost their valuable domains to register.com - I'm sorry I resold for register.com.
Do a who is for iArabs.net - I hope the same thing does not happen for xerocity.com

Are you sure that they purchased it? I am not trying to defend them, but it could have been a fraud purchase. Once a domain is put through the system you can't (that I know of) just pull it. If a person purchased a domain name with a fraudulent CC and they couldn't place it into the pool again, it would be smart to point it to themselves.
Well, if they are doing this, I guess we'll have to become and ICANN acredited registrar so this doesn't happen. :D
TheOp 06-20-2002, 10:24 PM go with stargate.com
DotComster 06-20-2002, 10:55 PM I have never had a problem with a current domain (active and paid for) at register.com, I don't think any registrar has better support either. I got many valuable domains thru register.com - but some that expire they really do keep. Also register.com gave me 2 three letter domains for free - a dot net and org of a dot com I got thru them. It's only domains that expire that I saw problems with.
NameZero went thru this period where they tried to resell all the domains they had, and since NetSol was doing it - who could really complain?

True - but I often wonder if it would be worth the trouble ;)
RotoHost 06-21-2002, 01:42 AM www.weblaunching.net is another OpenSRS reseller that offers $12 per year domains. www.000domains.com is excellent, too.
Selpaw 06-21-2002, 02:49 AM GoDaddy for sure!
Just transfered a few more domains from OnlineNic to GoDaddy. GoDaddy is the way.
Currently have 4 domains with GoDaddy, another domain is currently being transfered to GoDaddy...
dre145 06-27-2002, 02:20 PM im a newbie in the domain info
so im gonna ask if i buy a domain can i switch the host server?
and is there a limit to how much times you change it.
i want to get a domain in 2 days or so thats why i ask
thewitt 06-27-2002, 05:22 PM There is no need for there to be any relationship between where you purchase a domain and where you host a domain.
Your domain record contains the names of your nameservers. The nameserver contains the IP address where your domain is hosted. You can change this as often as you wish.
