Hi,

Nocster has a server that I am interested in:
- P3 800GHz
- 9Gig SCSI HD
- 256MBRAM
- 300GB Bandwidth
- $89/month
- CPanel additional $19.95/month

Rackshack has a Celeron with the following specs:
- Celeron 1.3GHz
- 60Gig IDE HD
- 400 GB Bandwidth
- $99/month
- Ensim included

My current server is crap and has problems as illustrated by this:

http://www.lancerforums.com/status/

I would like to move to one of these companies soon, but I can't decide which would serve me best.

I have little management skills, but I am not hosting other sites, only my own. I do need to be able to easily setup subdomains for my members to offer them a small amount of webspace and bandwidth. For this I would like to use a control panel to ease the process. This will bring the Nocster price up to ~$108/month

Additionally, I need to use the following:
- Latest GD Library (2.x)
- ImageMagik
- Zend Optimizer

Nocster has stated that they will install this for me for $65 extra, but I cannot find out whether Rackshack would do the same or if they already include these features.

Based on the status link above, would the Nocster server suit me ok? The status report shows that I have used close to 8gigs of space! I can't imagine what could be on my server... I have a feeling it's a little screwed up, as the mysql db is about 150MB large and I use little else. Could this be my log files?

I need to make some decision soon as my current server looks like a ticking time bomb!!!

Thanks,

Mark

rackshack isn't going to install anything for ya sorry dude
that's just the way it is with rs
unmanaged server
you do it on your own
they can provide some support for your control panel, but you might get an answer like they can't help you because they dont go that far support wise with whatever.

i wouldnt go with just a 9 gig drive
9gigs is very small
20 is good

id go wtih rackshack
but thats me

Ummm.. Rackshack will not do anything except plug the power cord in. If you are looking for somehting easy to use and you have no admin skill and you think the 9 gigs will be enough then I would give nocster a shot, nocster is supposed to be a managed solution so if you were to need some assistance you might get more help where as with RS if you dont know your stuff you can get yourself in a bad spot quick.. good luck you might also wanna read some hreads on nocster as it is a new company and I am sure people will be posting reviews.. good luck,,

WHM has an install RPM / install perl module feature that you could use to install those programs, and save yourself $65

Maybe im the only one, but i dont see, whats so crap about the server? It's been up 77 days which for most of us is a very acceptable uptime, it's cpu usage, memory usage, etc. are all within a very reasonable range, you've got tons of space, im not following the problem you're describing, or does it peak at other hours (i realise 3:40 pm isn't peak for most)?.

Yea, but he's got almost 30 gigs free, wouldn't it be easier to just juggle some stuff around?

Ditto on what you just said. Looks fine to me too.

Save yourself some hastle and $$$. Just clean up your log files on the /usr partition and you'll be just fine. :-)

Take care,

Brian

I could do that, but then next month will be something else. I just want to take this opportunity to switch to a new host and have things done right.

*shrug* all i was saying was if you weren't pleased with the host, then granted, move, otherwise, if the host is good, dont put yourself out on a limb, just get some maintenance done, or change your setup/clean the box off and reinstall (since thats all you'd be doing with a move).

This raises a question, Mark.

How do you plan to do it right? It isn't particularly wrong at the moment, and if it is working, I wouldn't break it. Just fix the /usr space issue and move on to more important things.

Then again, if you just want a reason to switch to another host (cheaper, more, whatever), then bite the bullet and go--but figure out what you did wrong on the first box first, or you'll end up in the same spot two months from now. Beware that cheap hosts behave like cheap hosts though. You simply can't expect help from, for example, RackShack if you're only paying $99/month (I charge just under that per /hour/ of my time to support folks--competent support is expensive). Assuming all goes well, and you learn your way around your server, you'll do fine with the bargain hosts...otherwise you're going to dig yourself a much deeper hole and jump right in.

I understand what you guys are saying, and I tried to do just that up till now. The thing is I never setup this server and I've been having problems with it ever since I got it. I've emailed my host, who owes me a rebuilt server, multiple times and no response. I've called... nothing. I'd rather take my chances with a new server and start fresh, with a Control Panel which I am not given with my current host.

When I first got this server I received someone elses password, the DNS was never setup and never got setup for days even though it was promised to be done. None of the commands I was given for apache, etc work. Ftp is sometimes screwy... I just want out.

Thanks for all the help,

Mark
