View Full Version : Unlimited bandwidth - is it possible?

Can anyone offer an opinion on Planet Velocity's (http://planetvelocity.ca) XL Internet package? It claims to offer unlimited monthly bandwidth for only $99/month. I called and talked to a sales guy and the only catch is you don't get "triple redundancy," which he explained as meaning the server has a 99.9% up-time rating, which in turn means the server can be down for up to 45 minutes per month without PV being liable for anything. I was also told no down-time has ever yet occurred.

Sounds too good to be true. And yet it does seem to me that they're being on the level.

So how can this be? I'm trying to decide on a host and having a god awful time of it. There are too many choices, all promising this, that and the other. I don't know what to believe. (The big issue for me is I don't yet know how much traffic I expect to have.)

Is this regarding a shared hosting or dedicated hosting plan.. either way it is not available ANYWHERE nor can anyone backup this claim of offering it.. So a search and you will get more info than you want or need.. You might also want to stop by unlimband.com and add this host to the list.. good luck

also I dont know the math off hand but I think 45 mins a month is alot less than 99.9%.

43,200 minutes in a 30 day month
-99.9%
===================
43.2 minutes of available downtime per month.

"the server has a 99.9% up-time rating" this is the key phrase they mention the the server has a 99.9% up-time rating, what about it's network?

Do they say the the server is guaranteed to have 99.9% availability to the internet?

Read everthing you can about them to see if there are any catches anywhere. The above pointed out may by one of their ways out of that refund you would be due if they are unable to keep that 99.9% up-time guarantee.

Taken from their website: "We back this by offering a refund to any account that is "down" due to a network issue under our control."

You can always blame someone else for your downtime. In most cases only the host would know the true reason.

If you are in doubt, trust your instinct. Unlimted hosts often fail and/or provide crappy service.

Yep there really is unlimted bandwidth! (is that what you want to hear?) That is why there is actually only one REAL host who is hosting the entire internet. All the others are just resellers.
There is also unlimited oil, electricity, clean air, clean water, wetlands, tropical forrests, ect. UNLIMTED EVERYTHING!!!
. . . and it can be all yours for $5 a month!
WAIT, No it can't, cuz I just bought it all!
YaHooooo!

This is the thing: they DO say there is a catch, it being this lack of redundancy. Is it possible they can get away with offering unlimited bandwidth by nixing the redundancy?

I don't know about their network, though they have data centres in Boston, Montreal and Toronto on OC-3 lines.

What I tried to get from the sales guy was why anyone would go with any of their other plans (which are all like the typical plans you see out there and do NOT offer unlimited bandwidth) if this XL plan was so great. And he said it's simply because some people want the peace of mind that comes with the triple redundancy, especially if they have mission-critical Web sites. Sound reasonable?

Thing is, I can definitely live with the possibility that there may be 43.2 minutes of downtime in a given month if I can get all that bandwidth. Because it seems that the likelihood of the downtime actually occurring would be very small. Or am I completely wrong?

put a 400MB video on your webspace , put links on a few forums and watch as your outbound BW goes to 30+Mb/s

if this company doesn't cancel you after 24hours STRAIGHT of 30Mb/s , then that is REALLY unlimited bandwidth..

and in that case I will signup with them :)
