I bought my new HP about 6 months ago, and it just crashed like yesterday, i had to format it and reinstall Windows ME. well i can not find the serial number for it. What should i do it, Microsoft basically said Tough luck, just not in those words. I can't use ME.

Easy answer: Get Linux. :)
Hehe. Try complaining to HP. They might be able to get you that serial number back.

You should have gotten a recovery disk though... I don't know what a HP one looks like but we Compaq owners call it 'The Nasty Red Disk' As for the serial at the very least you should have a Windows manual somewhere in the box. The serial will be on the front cover (if you did get one).
In nothing there helps, and Microsoft won't help you may need to go to one of those 'For Educational Use Only' type sites that tend to be full of serial numbers.
*Insert disclaimer about not using illegal software*

Most likely they will think you are trying to rip them off / get a free serial number. However I can't disagree with getting linux :-)!

Congratulations. I tried Mandrake (7.0 I think it was). All I ever got was 640x480 and 8 bit color or so... It wasn't going to play friendly with my PC Card modem either :)

if you have been sold the o/s with the machine(is it itemised on your invoice?)hp should provide you with the number.check the booklet-it should have been in the box.
if hp is unhelpful you may want to remind them that they may have sold you a machine with an illegal o/s installed.
if your o/s is registered check with microsoft help.if all fails search for serials 2000.
