Get out and talk to local companies. Word of mouth has been our most effective method, listing in host directories helps a little too.

Everybody seems to have a different experience, most of our customers come from Google. Try FindMyHosting (http://www.findmyhosting.com/), they don't accept advertising. And post in the "requests" section. Good luck! :)

Right here on WHT! Or maybe try submiting your site to search engines.

I can't agree with google. I bought ad space from them and didn't receive one sale. It's different to be in the search results. But their ad space is a waste of money.

Word of mouth. We get most of our customers either by our sales reps talking to people or our service being recommended by existing customers.

Word of mouth is the best form of advertising but as you can imagine, it's go to start somewhere.

We use Google AdWorks and it's great but the most expensive advertising we have found. Our good clicks cost about $2.50 per click, not possible for most smaller companies.

If you are looking to get started, try the top 10 PPC's,
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Searching/Search_Engines/Specialized/Pay-Per-Click/

Overture is great but you would have to spend about $2k a month to see results.

Give each a try, about $25 to $50 each. Each of them have their strong points and weaknesses but you are bound to find one that you mesh with.

Would you share with us your sales conversion ratio on those Google Adword ads?

If your target market is local, you may also find that outdoor advertising, eg, billboards, bus stop backings, and so on are effective. They usually have wide consumer reach and will brand your company within the local marketplace, encouraging business, market awareness, and possible partnerships.

Consider the specialized PPC engines for web hosting too.
