View Full Version : RZ AUP violation? opinion needed
takisgr 10-27-2006, 01:46 AM Hello everybody!
I received an email yesterday from RZ Abuse departement, saying they had suspended my account because i hosted a proxy site, and this an AUP violation.
Ok, but the fact is, that i was not actually hosting a proxy site!!!
I just had a .com domain, redirecting to my dedicated server where i actually host the proxy site!
Well, i said that to their abuse department, and the answer was:
"even point with a proxy url to other proxy site violates"
and theis AUP actually says:
15.6. You may not host any type of HYIP, autosurf, proxy, or bit torrent on Hosting Zoom servers.
Is it my english, or i don't get that right?
It clearly says that i can not, "host" this type of site, the only thing i did was redirecting the www to my actual server....
At least they gave me 48 hours for the dns to propagate....

I would say its 50/50 but if the DNS for the proxy site is pointing to their server, and the DNS servers are attacked then are going to have issues. They are playing fair with letting you get the data so I would mark it up to expierence and move on
trish75 10-27-2006, 08:56 AM I'm very sorry but I don't know what the proxy site is. Can anybody here explain it to me?
Thanks in advance.
A Proxy Site is web based proxy browsing service which allows you to surf the web anonymously. [It] works by redirecting the requests you make to websites through our own proxy server. Therefore any site you connect to thinks its coming directly from [hosting] server.
(Adapated from http://www.proxysite.org/)
trish75 10-27-2006, 10:32 AM Thanks a lot for detailed explanation.
Segey 10-27-2006, 10:43 AM And what are the consequences of redirecting to the proxy sites? How could this problem be handled? I know there are proxy sites where are they hosted?

Proxy sites need to be hosted on their own dedicateds, and even at that, probably clustered and load balanced dedicateds, if the proxy site is remotely busy.

But the large amount of bandwidth/CPU usage would not be on the RZ server, it would be on the server that the domain is redirecting to. The amount of resources used on the RZ server would be signifigantly less than the actual proxy site... but I can understand why RZ has the opinion that they have, they don't want to take any part in dealing with the potential mess that proxy sites can create.
Good luck on finding a host that allows you to link to the proxy site. :)
PremiumHost 10-28-2006, 03:41 AM Maybe it's a mistake. They did not check your website carefully ?

The fact that you have a domain redirecting to your proxy site already makes me wonder. Why not just have that domain in your dedicated server?
Or if all you really want to do is redirect the .COM site to your proxy server, you can do that with the registrar of the domain and need not involve ResellerZoom or any hosting company.
So I can imagine it brings up many questions and I guess ResellerZoom does not want to have anything to do with an individual or company running proxy servers.
Ultimately, their interpretation of the AUP is what counts. And if you still doubt it, they simply invoke section 15.8
15.8. Reseller Zoom reserves the right to add further restrictions to Customers'use of the Reseller Zoom Services if such further restrictions are reasonably necessary to keep its hosting service operating efficiently for all users.
So maybe Reseller Zoom could make changes to it. But it seems fine as it is.
You should be very happy that they gave you enough notice before the suspension. Other hosting companies might immediately suspend your account and withhold access from you, even if you just want to get the data.
If you are still at a loss, you can always try to email RZ and request for more explanation. Just don't be rude and demanding and I'm sure they will go out of their way to reply to you.
Good luck.
HostTitan 10-29-2006, 04:11 PM Often times the point of not hosting proxy sites, is the legal liabilities that come with it. By offering redirection to a dedicated server, they are now indirectly associated with the proxy site -- and, hence, they are now exposed to some of the liability. Your best bet would be to find a datacenter which doesn't have a problem with this, and host everything on one or more servers in that facility.
