View Full Version : Cedant's dead, now what?

After doing a search on Cedant, I'm happy (and at the same time, discouraged) to see that a few other people are having problems with Cedant. No need to rehash the details, suffice to say that their "move forced by legal issues" has lead to a sharp decline in customer support (if charting 0% on a graph counts as a decline).

I was heading out on vacation a few days after all of this started. At first I was sympathetic to Cedant, as they have served me quite well in the past year and I glowingly recommended them to friends. I figured they had some hard luck and would sort things out in a few days.

I was wrong.

My site's links rely heavily on ASP, so while my site -looked- okay, it was basically unusable on the new server. They also lost 7 days of my content, and I update 3-5 times daily. Oh well, it's gone, no worries. So I finally got them to move me to an "ASP-ready" server hours before my flight left. That proceeded to break my entire site into a mess of 404-error includes.

I'm hoping to cancel my account with Cedant and move elsewhere. I recently got a postcard from CheapWebHosting.com which basically blames Cedant (who moved from Linux->Sun servers) and encourages me to sign up with them instead. I assume that CWH works with the Alabanza server farm, and their rates look nearly the exact same as Cedant's. I was all ready to sign up with CWH until I found this site and did some reading on the issues. Now I'm not sure if any Alabanza host is a smart move.

My question now is this: Can I please get some suggestions on what host to sign up with?

My needs aren't too fancy:
~100MB space
3 or 4+ GB monthly bandwidth
Handful of email redirects
Decent tech support via email/phone
ASP
<$20/month
(Preferable but Optional: Web-based HTML editor interface)

I don't know where to start these days. If this thread can generate a few leads for me to look at, I would appreciate it. No one likes 10 days of downtime...

Thanks,
jerobi

We used Cedant too but we are moving out. They have been providing a 1st-class service to us previously. It is unfortunate that we are now forced to pack up.

But to be fair to Cedant, they are a victim too.... of Alabanza. The story behind the curtain goes like this:

Cedant and Jumpline (two of the biggest customers of Alabanza) planned to move out of the Alabanza network. One of them even made the news public at its website. When Alabanza found out about that, they immediately (and unethically) issued a letter of contract termination to both parties. This forced Cedant and Jumpline to shorten the migration process to about 1~2 weeks instead of 1~2 month. The situation was made harder when Alabanza cut their access to the server.

Then Alabanza stood out as a "hero". They dug out the contacts from the two hosts' servers and called the customers directly (including me). And the conversation started like this:

"We have received many complaints from Cedant's customers regarding the move ...... we would like to provide you an alternative ..... if you are interested in moving back to our network ....."

It seems that Alabanza has many unused hardware in their storeroom now after the two left. They are now offerring dedicated hosting at about 50% cheaper compared to their price list in March 2002 (but still very expensive comparing to others such as Nocster).

I was also told by Cedant that law suits have been filed against Alabanza.

If you would like to find out more about Alabanza's unethical acts, do a search for the word "Alabanza". There were many interesting posts 3 days ago.

BTW, I noticed that Cedant's connection has greatly improved in term of download time and FTP. I would say that the improvement is quite noticeable.

Sadly, we have decided to get our own dedicated server.

As a competitor of Cedants, and as a former reseller, I have nothing but praise. I have yet to find customer service by ANY other company which comes close to matching Cedants.

Sorry to hear that they're experiencing problems. Knowing the expertise of their staff, I doubt that will last long.

I'm sorry to hear Cedant and Jumpline are having troubles. I've heard many great stories about their support, etc. From the story told, I think Alabanza needs to be sued the pants off. It was wrong what they did to these two companies.
