They want people to upload scripts that are going to prolly be commercial, and let them encode them via the web.....

Should be fine. Do you ever worry about passing your credit card number over the web. Sure the connection is secure, or at least the browser says it is, but what happens to your number at the other end? Maybe it's being added to a list of credit card numbers that are sold on. What about email addresses. Do you really believe sites when they say that they won't pass on your email address? etc.

Trust is part of life, and I'd wonder what would be in it for such a service to rip off your code. If you steal something then you have to have a market for itt, and their wouldn't be one.

This is particularly aimed at the masses who don't want to spent four figure sums on an encoding solution.

Furthermore a web service doesn't preclude an outright purchase of an encoder for larger clients. An encoder costing four figure sums excludes almost everyone.

There is a reason why I use spam@mydomain.com :)

If you are encoding the source of your programs this could mean you are going to make a moderate profit off of this, what if they happen to keep a copy and it slips out :D

I could see this usefull if you are on a shared host, and you are running a BB and want to just encode your config.php so others can't see your mysql info....

I must be missing something. PHP is server side, nobody can steal your code unless they have access to the server. What is everyone so worried about? Get a proper host and you have no worries.

Sorry if I am wrong. =\

Hahah... Welcome to the shared hosting world, everyone can read everyone's files typically...

Also, if you are selling your script, and you don't want people to pirate it, you put a call back in it, but with PHP being plain text people can just remove the call back....

Pricing will be determined on the basis of compiled code and phpe will therefore be a lot cheaper than other products in the market.

We also have plans to launch a stand alone encoder in future, but the start will be with an ASP version that is comparatively cheaper.

I assure you that we are and will be taking every measure necessary to protect your code and the system will not be in a shared server environment when it is launched.

The ionCube encoder is now launched. at http://www.ioncube.com/encoder (and http://www.php-encoder.com)

The site offers secure online encoding service of files and entire application archives, uses compiled code encoding (the same as Zend Encoder) rather than source encoding, has safe mode compatibilty, full language support, and other features, plus compatibility with release 1.3.2. of the PHP Accelerator (http://www.php-accelerator.co.uk)

A standalone encoder will be released soon that packs in even more features, but the online encoding provides a highly affordable solution for those with modest encoding needs. There's now no need to spend several hundred dollars, or even thousands for a quality encoder, when ionCube encoded archives can be only a few dollars to encode. Small scripts and even entire web sites can be a dollar or less. Cost is based purely on compiled code complexity, and which is why web sites encode particularly cheaply as there's a low complexity relative to size. A price guide on the site gives some pricing examples.

Version 1.0.3 of the PHP decoder extension for securely executng ionCube encoded scripts is now compatible with Zend Optimizer as well as safe mode.

In supporting both Zend Optimizer and Safe Mode, version 1.0.3 provides a no-cost but significant value adding addition for hosting providers, and allows ionCube encoded files to be executed on the widest possible server configurations. With users increasingly looking for an affordable PHP encoding solution, hosts including the ionCube decoder as standard will be an attractive choice for PHP users, allowing users to protect their scripts as well as their passwords etc.

The ionCube decoder will be compatible with the majority of hosting providers who support PHP (basically if you have a more recent PHP than 4.0.6), and is the only decoder to support safe mode and zend optimizer other than ZO itself. Once installed, PHP is able to execute Zend Encoded scripts, ionCube encoded scripts, and regular PHP, and is transparent to the user.
