Running the Raq 4 OS is an accident waiting to happen (security-wise). You should run Rackstar, Strongbolt, or at a minimum the Raq 550 OS on your Raq 4.

Realy? I was advised against the 550 as Raq4 is more secure, seccondly Rackstar dont look rite good. Stongbolt does! but then you gt to buy it, which is defenetly annoying.

Well, the Raq4 OS was discontinued in February 2003, whereas Sun has committed to patch the Raq550 OS through February of next year. Sun sometimes issues security patches for the Raq4 as well as the 550, but the only system still being "officially" supported is the 550.

The Raq4 OS is based on Linux 2.2.16 (patched to 2.2.19), the 550 OS is based on Linux 2.4.16 (Rackstar is based on 2.6.16, StrongBolt is 2.4.21). The Raq 550 has more recent versions of Sendmail, PHP, Apache, etc. Some of these shortcomings can be addressed by applying 3rd-party patches found on the net. (Note: this is not to say that the 550 is the ne plus ultra of security).

Use your judgement, but I suspect you were told the Raq4 OS was better by someone who (surprise!) sells Raq4 services and software. One such vendor that I'm aware of continues to call 550 bad, but won't say why.

As for Strongbolt vs. Rackstar, they both look good to me, really just different sets of cost, ease-of-install, and compatibility trade-offs.

( (I have no connection whatsoever with anyone who sells Raq systems, software, or services).)

Hmm, Very interesting.
I hear this now i have just updated my RAQ4 :( .
ASAP when i get my paypal working i think i will invest in strongbolt, alternatively Rackstar.

qnetworker: Strongbolt is Kernel 2.6 not 2.4 as you say.

You're right - I messed up. The latest Strongbolt is also based on 2.6.16 kernel, just like Rackstar. I was looking at an older version of CentOS.

No they only make bad updates now... :)

No really... they aren't expected to make any updates for a year or two now... That's why I started to make updates.

oh and the RaQ4 has been able to use the 2.4 kernel for about 2 or 3 years now... it's a easy update actually, but nobody every wanted it jump on the kernel ride of updates and ... nobody really needed it.
