Hello, i am very interested in 2 domains to shorten my current domain, but they are registered with moniker, why do these registars need to catch these domains? obviously they get first crack at them and i have no chance. One of the domains im interested in expires jan 07; whats the chance i will get this domain even if they don't re-register it? since it is registered by the registar.
The domain is only registered at Moniker, by someone else, not by Moniker themselves. At about the time of expiry you can backorder the domain at SnapNames. If it's not renewed and you win the ensuing auction, then the domain will be yours.

Okay so backordering the domain would be a waste of time?

5 minutes of wasted time... :)
To answer your question - Moniker is the registrar (one of the bets ones, by the way). If you're seeing them in the domain's whois means that true owner is using Moniker's privacy function.

That is the complete opposite of what I suggested. How did you come to that conclusion?

I was just asking you a question. I was asking if backordering it would be a waste of time if its going through the auction, then i should be bidding on it.
Moniker regged expiring domains get auctioned of at SnapNames before they are dropped from the registry. So you should bid/backorder it at SnapNames whenever it appears there for bid/backorder. Search for the Domain at SnapNames and put a pre-order (backorder) on it if you must, but I personally think that is a waste of time unless the domain actually expires. At which time you should then bid on the domain.
No I do not. To the question. I believe that the people should have the first right and registars should have to wait. I know alot of registars (GoDaddy, RegFly, etc) that registar most of the dropped names and market them off for profits. Since they can easily registar or "grab" from iCANN before the domain is released into the market for domain owners to register.
This means you either need to be a registar or you need to work for one. Otherwise you have to wait in line, let the big boys through out all the garbage and grab whats left.
