View Full Version : Ads becoming more annoying these days

I have nothing against web page ads, I accepted that they are part of life now. But some really cross the line. I am talking about those newer DHTML windows that appear not only on the page itself, but over the text you are reading. Man, I can tolerate those big ad blocks that chops the text paragraph into two, but appearing over what you are reading is really annoying.:cartman:

Yeah, it is like ads on tv going across the screen and covering up the shows you are watching. That would be rather irritating. Personally, I don't care for the browser freezing multiple or single popup. If I wanted something to pop up that I have to freakin' close, I would have opened another window. Now, some sites have it for every damn page you navigate on (every friggin' page you click). Also, if it only was one pop up every now and then then that's one thing, but there are so many now.

I know, pop up stopper. I used to use one, but I suppose I should re-explore the newer crop of programs out there. Sorry, to the advertisers but pop ups are fruching irritating.

I can handle pop unders...pop-ups and those moving ads that cover what you wanna read are easy to deal with..never go to that site again...

Pop-ups and Pop-unders are EVIL!

Even worse are some that start an auto-download. Gator has some of those now, and some other place I forget the name of. Bad enough they give you a pop-up, but trying to force a download on you is just plain pathetic!

Multiple pop-ups are a real curse. I do not return to sites that have them.

When surfing with Mozilla, pop-up/under windows really aren't a problem at all, but I do hate those DHTML/Flash ads. Some of them don't even give you an option to close them until they're finished playing.

If you're running Windows I highly suggest Proxomitron ( http://www.proxomitron.org ). The only downside is you take a small hit of delay as the program rewrites each page you render to block ads, popups, etc etc. I wish there was something equivalent on Mac OS X.

Have you seen the ads page that are displayed in between when you are transitioning to a different page on the same site? I know a few game sites are using it - it's the equivalent of TV commercial breaks and it irks me.

Yes, msn homeadvisor does this too. Biggggggg ad, tiny link under the ad that says something to the extent of "no thanks, continue" but you have to have a keen eye to catch it the first time. That is rather annoying also.

I wouldn't mind an ad inbetween the forum pages (like when you search, it says, "Hold on while we search" or something like that. Throw an ad there if you like, as the page will refresh to the content, but I don't like something that stops you and then makes you look for the link to 'continue' on to what you clicked on. Blah...

Stopped using dictionary.com as they have a banner ad that stops the page from loading for 10 seconds and then sometimes pops up an ad. Found other sites that look words up almost as good and no pop up and no delay banner.

Will they miss me? Most likely not, but hopefully more that just little ol' me does this.

people everywhere are making their stance clear on the flash/dhtml adverts...if you leave a site because of them, dont just go. Email the webmaster and let him know how you feel.
I know of several sites who have stopped using these ads purely because of the terrible visitor feedback.
Or, you can just use Opera, and you dont get them :P

CNet's ads are so irritating that I consider turning off Javascript and Flash

I even have to block cookies from them...if you don't you're forced to register to download stuff from download.com.

If you are a site that has alot of ads another way to stop the ads is to do the following.
1 Find out where the base url where the ads are coming from. For example and gamespy.com I believe most of them come from ad.gamespy.com , adcontent.com.

2 Use your firewall setting setup so that the base url in step # 1 is blocked.

Well that is it.The only side effect of this method is that instead of seeing banners on the page places where the banner would be have 404 instead.the 404 are only the size of the banner.

I've been contemplating writing an RFC that would deprecate DHTML ads, code that opens new browser windows without any action by the user, and other obnoxious ad techniques that make websurfing and endless commercial.

Anyone interested in being a part of it, send me a PM.

Whether the W3C and IETF will actually enact it remains to be seen, but the larger number of people that support it, the better the odds.

Certainly after getting publicity as an I-D it will gather attention...
