View Full Version : Bandwidth... Bandwidth... and Bandwidth.... (and servers)
cascompany 06-16-2002, 05:19 PM I have been reading lot about bandwidth ... can anyone tellme how it's really ....
I mean ... a dedicated server monthly price... consiste in 3 things... server lease, bandwidth lease and service.
So... How much bandwidth cost?
Ej.:
Cogent : $0.10 Gb (really?.. I read this on a post)
Level3 : $?? Gb
Verio : $?? Gb
Other? : $?? Gb
Does anyone have this values ?
This will help me understand a lot of things hehe....
Cause if cogent is at this price ... 300Gb it's only $30 .... very very cheap!!! ... I mean, at this price, anyone can sell colo for $60 with this bandwidth without having to oversell our bandwidth (as I read in other post...)
So, lots of Dedicated Servers based on Cheap Bandwidth providers can have really low prices, with real bandwidth if they don't charge too much for the lease.
Oh... and will be VERY interesting that monsters like RS offer LEASE to OWN plans... :D
Regards.

Bandwidth prices depend on the amount of bandwidth you purchase. :)
cascompany 06-16-2002, 05:36 PM another comment ...
how much a server can cost? (server? bah... mostly are just white boxes....)
For example ... an AMD system like:
AMD XP1700
512Mb RAM
40GB HD
Costs about ~400 usd. (sure you got it for less on quantity)
So... suppose you want to get the server cost on 1 year.
it's $34 / Month .... suppose $40? .. ok.
Bandwidth? ... suppose $40 more for cheap bandwidth (more than 300Gb)
you have $80 .... just add $19 more for support.
= $99 / month BIG server with LOT of bandwidth... :)
I mean... with a setup fee of $300.... the $34 month becomes just $9 ... so I would expect a $75/month server if setup is applied...
I am to crazy?
Just trying to aproximate costs....
I'm sure that lot of companys can have $99 dedicated servers using good (like mentioned) pc's, with $0 setup. or even cheaper if setup included.... (all this thinking in cheap cogent or similar bandwidth...)
Anyway... just my point of view...

cascompany 06-16-2002, 05:47 PM Mmm... you are a little wrong ... Gb is not the same as Mbps....
but good example... if they charge $3K for 100 Mbps .... then:
With 100 Mbps = 31.640 GB in 1 month
So.... the cost of 1 GB in a month is : $0.094
I know ... I know... this will be at 100% use...
suppose at 50%? ... let's say you use just 15.000 GB in one month per 100 Mbps line.... so your cost per GB is $0.20 ... and you are running at 50% !!! like pretty good eh?
I don't know what is the average recomended use of a line of this type.... but I think is good to know this numbers :stickout
Regards.
skylab 06-16-2002, 05:59 PM 100mbps = alot more than 31.640gb per month.

I think you are a bit confused:
A service provider purchases a 100Mbps cogent pipe for $3000 dollars a month.
100 Mbps = 32,000 GB a month
(1 mbps =320 GB)
SO -> $30 for every Mbps or 320 GB = $0.10 for every GB.
You were correct in the price per month for every GB, but your conversion from 100Mbps to monthly bw was incorrect.
cascompany 06-16-2002, 06:27 PM Yeah... I just say this.... I'm not confused at all
100 Mbps = 12,5 Mbytes/second.
in 1 DAY you can transfer exactly : 1.080.000 Mbytes :o
in a 30 days month : 32.400.000 Mbytes.
or the same ... 31.640 Gbytes
or the same... 30,90 TeraBytes ...
so... $3000 for 31640 GB = $0,0948 per GB.
BUT... you will never use it at 100% ...
most isp/server comp. dont ever use it over 80% .... or it may get lagged :)
So you'll never use 31640GB a month from your 100Mbps line ... but you can certanly use about an average of 65% (with about 50% / 80% over the day ) ... but this is relative :D
I mean with all this ... the "usable Gb cost" is higher than the "satured 100% gb cost" .... get it? ...
If you have an average use of 65% of your 100Mbps line ... you'll use about : 20 TBytes ... and you pay $3000 ... so the cost of every GB is : $0.15
If you average use is less ... your cost per GB is Higher....
get it?

Not confused, but also not from North America. What was confusing other people was that a lot of us are from the States, so we read 31.640 as a bit less than 32, not as 31640.

There are a lot of other costs involved with a data center infrastructure than just pipe and servers. The costs you are talking about aren't even half of the costs that most data center providers incur.
cascompany 06-16-2002, 07:17 PM I'm just asking about bandwidth prices...
like this 100Mbps Cogent for $3000 you say...
Anyone have this info? like how much a Gig-E line cost ? (Cogent, Level3 ... and others....)
This way, I can do maths and know about how true can be a 400Gb or 500Gb offer from a dedicated server company....
For example... if someone say: 500Gb a month of Verio bandwidth ... for $99/month .... is this true? or not?
Just an example... but is a good way to analyse this 'maybe new' companies or so... and see if what they offer is true or not .... (you just ask them bandwidth and provider... and do the maths :)
Just this...
Is another way to check companyes eh?
--- from another post ----
I might be wrong in this, but most of these "cheap bandwith" offers are of the following reason(s):
1. They are way overselling their bandwith. For example, they are trying to sell OC3 bandwith at DS3 capacity
---------------------------------
With info on prices of the bandwidth... and info about what lines/providers have your server company... you can check if they ARE or NOT overselling their bandwidth...
At least this Cheap providers (99/month and under....)
Regards.

Let me tell ya, They're all overselling. Yes cogent is cheap, ($30,000/month for a gig-e) but still you have to take hardware costs, software (ie Control panel if any) power, employee wages etc... into consideration.
All these cheap dedicated providers ARE overselling, that's for sure. Heck you rarely ever see any colo offers that offer 300 GB of transfer for 99 bucks, unless they are overselling ofcourse.

I think it is safe to say that even the more expensive providers oversell. Because most sites are not going to use all of their available bandwidth all the time, it would be poor business practices not to oversell bandwidth. The question should be what multiple of oversubscription is unacceptable. Of course, that number may not be valid either. Probably the best strategy is to ask a dedicated provider for graphs showing their bandwidth utilization (all dedidacted providers should have this information available), and monitor it yourself. If they are consistently maxing out the line they are oversubscribed. If they are in the 80-90% range...ask them what their plans are, otherwise don't worry too much about it.
cascompany 06-17-2002, 01:08 AM uuallan, I agree 100% with you :)
but... I have just seen MRTG graphs for RackShack ... Don't remember other dedicated server sites with this information... (mostly just say "oh we have this oc3 ... and this oc'N'... to this provider and ... bla bla" .... just marketing words... no numbers on use of it... plans...etc.)
I mean the Mrtg graphs are one of the best things RS have... and maybe this is one of the best things people see at RS.
I hope that others put this info available, this makes a company very CREDIBLE... but well... maybe they don't have to be a credible? ... or maybe they just have something to hide?
Just my opinion... :stickout

Yeeees, and I'm sure if you were to purchase bandwidth from XO in a greater volume than 1meg you would get a cheaper price per meg.
cascompany 06-17-2002, 04:41 AM mmm... yeah...
I have searched some colo's .... and for just 1Mb it cost about $400 - $500 ....
BUT... for example for about 100Mb drop to less than $300 ...
and for a whole 1Gbit of bandwidth ... it's just $150 ... (prices per Mbit)
And this is NON cogent bandwidth ... but BGP multihomed...
not as cheap as cogent ...
I mean... $150.000 vs. $30.000 (aprox) on 1Gb lines...
so... you get about min of $0.50 per Gbyte vs. $0.10 cogent. (at 100%)
talking in real numbers... maybe a $0.75 vs. $0.15 (I mean, at 65% usage.... or so...)
So... the same 300GB that may cost less than $50 for cogent...
Costs about $250 for a multihomed redundant bgp connection...
so... if you get a cogent server for 99/month...with 300GB/month can be not-overselled ("can" be...)
and ... if you get a multihomed server for 99/month ... with 300GB/month it's at least 5 times overselled  :eek2:
Anyway... but I'm sure that the average use of bandwidth is about 20% (about 60GB of the 300GB for ex.) ... or all that oversell will get fu**ed ... :)
Just my thougts...
cascompany 06-17-2002, 04:46 AM mmmm... anyway ...
I think RS get Gig-E lines cheaper than this ...
I'm just waiting these two more 1Gb lines... heheh
and new and cool $1 setup servers :stickout

but at present i don't see this is happening. If you see the market Huge bandwidth and Unlimited Bandwidth offers are ruling the market.
