View Full Version : how long does transfer usually take?
MariG 10-12-2006, 12:10 AM I am in the process of moving my domains from that horrible RegisterFly to namecheap, but I am not sure what to do with one domain of mine. It expires on 11/02/2006 (in 3 weeks from now).
Should I start a transfer today? Or is it too risky? Maybe I should try to renew with RF (which is a nightmare, of course), and then transfer? I don't want to get stuck in transfer and lose my domain. On the other hand, I had a VERY bad experiences trying to renew with RF. What should I do?? How long does a transfer from RF to namecheap takes? Domain is unlocked and still with ENOM.
Please advice, I don't want to do smth stupid and lose my domain, this site is very important to me.
cd-mchase 10-12-2006, 12:15 AM I've never done a transfer to/from either of those companies but speaking generally, transfers shouldn't take 3 weeks. The most I've had to wait was 10 days after the response from the losing registrar.
You should be able to start the process now and be fine.
k3rnd 10-12-2006, 12:41 AM at three weeks you should have no trouble. i wrote all the specific steps in one of the forums about two months ago. i think you can use the upper right hand "search" button and enter my id.
the important things, make sure your email addy is listed in "admin contact", then go to your new registrar and start a domain transfer (request to move your domain to your new account with them). you will get a transfer request form at your admin addy-in less than a few hours- approve it. you might get a warning from your old registrar that your domain is being transfered away! It should allow you to "Approve" the move immediately, do not reject it! At worst case it will default to an approval in five days if you do nothing (but why wait). in about four hours after the last approve, the move should show up in your whois. check several independent whois searches, some update much faster than others. then check to see if you have dns control at your new registrar- yes? you are home free...
btw do not "push" from old registrar!!!
good luck

Oceanworld 10-12-2006, 03:43 AM 3weeks is more than enough as transfer usually takes 5-7days. That being said, you have to do your part by ensuring that the domain is not locked and that you approve the transfer email asap. No transfer can take place if you don't do these.
However if the domain is very valuable and you don't want to take chances, renewing with RF 1st and then transfering out would be a better footing.
RoLLex 10-12-2006, 04:00 AM It takes about 2 weeks as far as I know
Stan Marsh 10-12-2006, 09:22 AM I've done transfers which took from couple of hours to 7 days. Please start the process ASAP (but first, unlock the domain and make sure you have the control over 'admin' email), because if you'll decide to renew with RF, it will be a *transfer* anyway (eNom - RF) and, trust me, a nasty one (please search this forum about problems people are encountering while 'renewing' at regfly).
Good luck!
Panikos 10-12-2006, 09:25 AM I just transfered three domains away from registerfly this week so I know how you feel. The slowest took about 2 days and the fastest something like 3-4 hours.
I remembered to turn off protectfly and check my own details were showing and I remembered to to unlock the domains. I did mess up slightly as one email went to an address with a strict filter on it and got deleted as spam, but that was my fault and I just canceled the transfer (one click on the registrar's site I was moving to) and restarted it.
I have had renewal problems with registerfly myself in the past so I personally would not try and renew first as that could be messy.
Dan541 10-12-2006, 10:13 AM its a shame registerfly's been going down hill..
im starting to move out
Lucky I only have 10 to move
MariG 10-12-2006, 09:13 PM thanks for your input, I started the transfer, 1 domain is already transfered, 3 say: "Auto verification of transfer request initiated", but 1 says: "Unable to retrieve current domain contacts from UWhois". Do you know why and what should I do?

Check your new registrar control panel, does it say the transfer was cancelled? Resubmit it, or contact their support. (they can either override the automated process - or be clueless ;-)
i had one domain do that, but it was caused by RF, they actually sent a notice of transfer. My quick approve only delayed the transfer a few hours. This was back in Feb. - the other transfers skated right by them.
Btw, don't be surprised if RF shows them, expired, in your account for the next year ;-)

MariG 10-13-2006, 01:49 AM No, it's not cancelled yet, it is still in process. Just says "Unable to retrieve current domain contacts from UWhois". But transfer is not cancelled.
When I opened an account with namecheap, I gave them my home street address, where I reside, and in the domain contacts is listed my POB address. Maybe that's what causing a problem?? My e-mail address is the same though.
Oceanworld 10-13-2006, 02:31 AM turn off whois protection, if any
MariG 10-13-2006, 02:53 AM yep, I turned it off. That's why I replaced my home address (which used to be there) with POB, because I don't want my home address to be visible to the whole world during the transfer.
Should I start a transfer today? Or is it too risky? Maybe I should try to renew with RF (which is a nightmare, of course), and then transfer?
My suggestion is that you should go to namecheap and begin a transfer, then you'll pay less and it'll be safer, but start it asap.
No, it's not cancelled yet, it is still in process. Just says "Unable to retrieve current domain contacts from UWhois". But transfer is not cancelled.
Call NameCheap about this. Sometimes they can progress the transfer manually when you get this message (well, they could at eNom, who NameCheap resell for).
